She’s just an idiot plain and simple.
I’m afraid I can’t agree. Firstly, her plan required her to go along with Chrysalis’ plan, which means she must accept the same flawed assumptions that made it unworkable. While that isn’t necessarily her fault at first, she should’ve known that she can’t just take the elements after extracting so much information from Pinkie and adjusted her plan accordingly.
Another thing to consider is that Chrysalis sees the clones as disposable. She’s not going in herself, therefore she doesn’t need to worry if collecting the elements proves more dangerous than she anticipates. For Clone Twilight, if retrieving the elements proves impossible, her life is on the line, either from the elements’ defences or from Chrysalis disposing of them.
Her lack of subtlety also does her few favours. She conspires with the rest of the clones while Chrysalis is watching, then loudly and unnecessarily declares her intention to betray her while she’s in earshot less than a minute later. If she didn’t somehow exceed Chrysalis in raw magical power, she wouldn’t have lived to regret it, if only for a few more seconds.
Also, as you have noted, it’s entirely possible that the clones were ultimately impossible to control. However, Clone Twilight seemed to believe it was possible and that she could be the one to do it. While I can’t say for certain how much she influenced their later actions, the fact that she blames them for “ruin[ing] everything” seems to suggest that she couldn’t.
In summary, Clone Twilight should’ve learned enough from Pinkie to know that Chrysalis’ plan, and thus her plan, was doomed from the start. At that point, it would’ve been better just to run, which would’ve dramatically increased her odds of survival, let alone achieving some unspecified malicious aim. She could’ve taken the other clones with her if she still believed she could control them, though that may have presented it’s own difficulties.
That’s just it: she was alive for less than a day, and she was already doing so well. She came across as someone who’s less prone to making mistakes out of egotism than Chrysalis. Hell, she was playing Chrysalis like a harp by preying on her desires.
But yes, the other evil clones were useless. I don’t know if you could stop them from being self-destructive, because they were of questionable sapience, since you could argue they couldn’t think about why they acted a certain way.

@AC97
I think you may be overestimating Clone Twilight. Her plan was severely flawed and she undermines it further by accidentally revealing her betrayal to Chrysalis, she failed to curb the other clones’ compulsive malicious and self-destructive behaviour and she lacks a great deal of basic knowledge about the world on account of having been alive for less than a day.
She was really lucky she didn’t bite it in The Mean Six at the hooves of Mean Twilight, and Equestria probably is too, seeing as an egomaniac that isn’t as smart as she thinks she is (not that I don’t think she possesses above average intelligence) is likely to be something that’s ultimately easier to deal with than Mean Twilight would be… well, except for the part where Chrysalis is willing to work with other villains. That is a complication or three.
