The writers knew far in advance this would be the last season. If season 8 had been the last season, then we would have likely just seen these same ideas for that season instead.

The reasons you just listed are very superficial and are not what the majority of any season of Friendship is Magic revolves around, and this is coming from one who prefers the fantasy adventure side of FIM. The show has always been about selling toys, which is how the show had the financial backing to begin with. The fantasy adventure aspects of this show have always taken a backseat, what you’re going to get in most episodes is slice of life. And Slice of Life is the focus for the majority of season 9.
 
I for one despise of the lackluster quality of previous seasons, with rehashing lessons and shiting on beloved characters, hell, I don’t even like Season 8 and it’s finale. But I think you’re overreacting here, especially since you’ve admitted you haven’t watched Season 9. If you did, you’d know it’s just like every other season and this is just an event episode.

(In a way, it might be justice if Starlight has nothing to do with Chrysalis’ defeat. It would make the bug’s failure all the sweeter, that it wasn’t even her most hated enemy to take her down.)

To explain I don’t think I’ve watched many of the episodes since maybe somewhere area season 6 or 7. The final season brought me back for a little and just as quickly I drifted. I still like the fandom. (The fanfics and art is creative and beautiful). But I don’t know what it is about the show lately it just seems so different and off. I will say though (and this is weird to be said by a macro fan) bigger and more is not always better.
