It actually isn’t over, dude.  
The movie is coming in 2021, the retro series just added G4 stuff on YouTube, the comics and manga are actually some of the best I’ve read, and the stage show is coming.  
Really, where we are at is a need to adapt as a fandom.  
What do you love about the show?  
For me, it is the Mane 6, the child-like innocence, and the messages about friendship. None of that is going to end in MLP, even when the actual show is over.

EQG is not canceled, Hasbro did not end it, they are just changing staff.  
At the very, very worst, it is getting a reboot.

Sure.  
Boulder already works with a talented team of writers under McCarthy’s supervision for 3 other shows. These teams are probably already working on the 2021 film, and reasonably would take over EQG.  
The reason they would continue EQG after scrapping Nick’s pitch is simple.  
Nick’s story pitches are not plans. Hasbro had the opportunity to makethem plans, but they were apparently either unsatisfied with his story pitch, or they decided it would be an easier transition if Boulder simply began a series from season 1. Nick has certainly tried to lead EQG in a new direction recently, with a focus on the girls being super heroes. But, that is a departure from EQG’s foundation, and it may well be that was unhappy with that.  
As for how they could produce the content in time, it is not hard. If we wanted to see new content premiere at the regular date, February or so, Boulder has until around the middle of November to begin production. Because these are shorts, they can be produced in a fraction of the time a full series can.  
As well, the 2021 movie wont likely be releasing in January 2021, but rather fall 2021. So, we still have 2 years until release. The film on began pre production in December, according to Boulder and Hasbro.  
As well, since G4 is already confirmed by Hasbro to be continuing clear through 2020, there is a vacancy of animated content that will most likely be filled. EQG is the logical way to fill that vacancy.

Gen 4 is about to come to an end on TV for both FIM and EQG. But honestly, I’m fine with this, at the very least, FIM is ending on a high note.

Why’d Hasbro continue EG if they scrapped the existing plans? Who’d write the new EG content? How could they produce meaningful EG content in the short time before working on the G5 movie due 2021?
 
These are questions that I need answered before I can be optimistic about EG continuing.

Exactly, it is annoying.  
I would rather mourn FiM genuinely. It IS a loss to loose this show, and the crew have felt like an extension of our fandom for years.  
We can mourn the loss of the show, without getting into blatant misinformation however.  
The truth is, MLP will continue on. The leaks are far from official. Hell, G4 itself it continuing on to 2020 at least, and that IS official news from Hasbro. So, I’m excited for the future!  
The truth is that FiM IS ending, and this show changed my life. Even if we keep these characters, we are saying goodbye to a crew that has embraced us as their fandom, and you can read the emotion in their messages. So, I am sad, as well.

@AspectofBlood21 speaks the truth, EG maybe “ending” but it doesn’t appear to be ending completely at least, it just seems DHX just handed it over to Boulder.
 
all this “the end is nigh” doom and gloom is getting annoying, let’s say EG was ending with MLP, sad yes but it will happen eventually and what would that really change? G4 would still be ending but the brony fandom will still go on making mlp based content for a long time, I don’t plan on leaving the fandom anytime soon.
