Why can’t they just be bi?
Well that’s the thing, they actually can be, if that’s how you want to see them. The staff specifically left the nature of Rarity and Applejack’s relationship up to each individual fan’s opinion, so having them be bi is exactly as correct as assuming they’re lesbians, or actually just friends, or something else entirely.

So… rarijack isn’t canon¿?¿?¿?
The people who were responsible for the series specifically stated that, despite having a fondness for the pairing on their end, they nevertheless left Rarity and Applejack’s relationship open to however individual fans want to see it. That is to say, if you like them as friends and nothing more, it is equally as valid an interpretation as the people who see them as being more than that. And while that doesn’t make rarijack “canon”, it doesn’t make the opposite case true either.

I had no idea I liked this idea so much. Basically, what happens when your friend has things that turn you on, but you’re not turned on by them as a whole? How do you deal with feelings of familiarity that might make things awkward? Does that mean you should try hooking up with your friend even though you’re not quite committed to the idea? This needs to be explored more.

I don’t know any specifics, this is just something I could see as a reason: Maybe Ragamuffin was just more of a casual cruise fling for Rarity - these things happen on every single cruise - while AJ looking up to a singer could be considered more serious devotion?

Was the difference the Ragamuffin ship sunk at end? So why are they more vocal about it here when they haven’t established this as romantic?
 
What does it say that the rarijack shippers are seeing this competing ship as romantic as opposed to assuming it as platonic?
