Raising the sun and moon was only ever a small part of Celestia and Luna’s “burden” (it literally takes just a few seconds out of their day to do), so I don’t see how putting their power in a artifact diminishes them, considering its well established that their power can work regardless of what it is inhabiting (provided the object or being is able to use it).

Further, you may be overstating the amount of power needed over the “type” of power needed. Yes, it was a serious strain back when unicorns did it. However, Journal of the Two Sisters states (and Horse Play implies) that it’s their special talent (i.e. their Cutie Marks and thus their magic) that allows Celestia and Luna to do it so easily, not simply because they themselves are very powerful. Considering that, and how it clearly only takes a bit of power for them to raise the sun and moon (again, they do it in a few seconds with no strain) it makes sense that they could grant an artifact the same ability by placing only a fraction of their magic in it.

I really don’t think it’s a good idea to bind the power to change day and night into an artifact that could be easily broken/stolen.

Well, If they were created by grogar, as is the current popular theory, that would explain their confusion at flurries natural birth.
Also, it would explain nightmare moon and the potential within celestia to become daybreaker. Grogar probably created the sisters to be weapons and their evil forms are what Grogar intended them to be.

Here’s an important lesson about justifying inconsistencies in fictional universes: Sometimes, lore-breaking events and contrivances, like Flurry’s birth, are just cases of careless writing and justifications to bring in new elements and plot lines that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Sometimes the Watsonian perspective for inconsistencies in a work contradicts itself too many times and breaks the rules the work initially established, which leads to fanwanking, like what you’re doing now, but when you look at a work from the Doylist perspective, it makes far more sense why a creator would add contradictory worldbreaking elements.

Twilight is not the only pony that celestia has to think of. Twilight has earned the right to rule and Celestia has given her the legitimacy and executive power to do so. But Twilight is not immortal and neither are her Friends. The medallion ensures that whoever is in charge when they are gone is not sole owner of the sun and moon.
She’s handing the reigns of power to her people rather than bestowing it on just one person. This is the exact kind of move that I would expect the Princesses to make if they are retiring. After a millinia of buildings and guiding equestrian society, it’s time to see if it can stand on it’s own.
And if in a few generations time, their people need them or the medalion is abused or destroyed, The princesses can step up again and course correct. They still have their powers after all.

That is some grade-a revisionism you keep bringing up. Once again, the point of this season is Celestia and Luna’s abdication and the transfer of their roles and duties onto Twilight, their successor, not the citizens of Equestria. It’s not like they abolish the monarchy and declare Equestria a republic from hence forth. It is a royal succession, a transfer of power from one monarch (or in this case diarchs) to the next. While it’s true Twilight has her friends to advise and aid her, the show has made it explicitly clear that Twilight, and only Twilight, will be the sole holder of executive political power in Equestria. Also, the amulet is the sole ownership of Twilight alone, until she abdicates as well and passes it onto her successor. Again, there’s no people power here.

It’s debatable whether a high concentration of magic makes one immortal, if the Two Sisters, Discord, Grogar, Tirek, and possibly Chrysalis are anything to go by. But for the sake of argument, let’s say it doesn’t, and Twilight stays mortal in spite of the Two Sister’s power transfer. All she’d have to do is transfer her magic to her successor worthy of wielding her power. And she and her friends would have plenty of time to choose. After all, it only took Celestia a couple of years to teach Twilight the importance of friendship through experience and prepare her to be her successor, that way, the power to non-lethally raise the sun and moon doesn’t die with Twilight.

I get the concept of an ancient immortal ruler passing on her power to a mortal who’s only lived for a few decades, but if Celestia and Luna’s goal for abdicating was to see how Equestria could stand on its own, why wouldn’t they hand over the actual reigns of power to their mortal successor instead of giving them an inferior replacement? So the two could do what with their powers exactly? It’s like inheriting a super car, but the owner keeps the key, and gives you a shitty replacement that’s prone to breaking and malfunctioning the car, and when that does happen, he’ll come back and fix it, which probably wouldn’t have happened had he given you the key in the first place. It’s not really a test to see if one can do better than you if the one being tested lacks the means to do it as effectively as you did.

Their importance is in no way diminished by the creation of this medallion.

I’ve already explained why the amulet is another awful concept concocted by the new incompetent staff who have no regard for the series’ continuity or quality. But to go even further, before the two sisters, raising the sun and moon was a strenuous task for teams of unicorns, which permanently depleted their magic, including Starswirl the Bearded’s. As powerful alicorns, Celestia and Luna were the only ones who could do so safely, which is how they got their cutie marks and came to rule Equestria. It was an immense responsibility they took on their shoulders. And it’s the effects of that responsibility that lead Luna to become Nightmare Moon, and Celestia banishing her, leaving her to rule alone for a millennia. An amulet with a small fraction of their magic cheapens those struggles and moments of discovery, by shifting their immense burden, and all the weight that came with it, to a shoddily-made object, and for what, a bland unfunny joke at the end of a contrived poorly written slice of life episode that diminishes Luna and Celestia even further?

Celestia and Luna, their deeds and legends are so ingrained into the core of equestrian society that they will be remembered as long as ponykind exists. Their importance is in no way diminished by the creation of this medallion.

The Journal of the Two Sisters, (take the canonicity of the book with a grain of salt) state that they’re natural born alicorns, different from the ones that ascend. Although, according to Faust, Alicorns aren’t born naturally. Flurry Heart is just the result of bad writing to justify a contrived toy line.

Of course it’s their personal qualities, rather than their power, that make Celestia a great ruler, and Twilight a great leader, but passing on the torch means entrusting one’s successor with the power one has to do that which one could not. Her and Luna transferring their magic unto Twilight would be a symbol of that. If Celestia could be a kind, benevolent and wise ruler, despite her immense power, then Twilight should be more than capable to do, not only the same, but usher in a new reign of peace and harmony that not even her predecessors could bring about to the world. With great power comes great responsibility, and Twilight has proven herself worthy of controlling said power. And what’s the point of keeping power for yourself if you no longer need it and are not in a position to use in any official capacity? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of succeeding?

With the exception of fluffy heart (who kinda messes up this theory), the show seems to suggest that ascension comes from using a magical artefact to perform powerful magic in the name of friendship. Twilight used the elements, cadence apparently used the Crystal heart (I think it was in one of the books)…maybe this little artefact is the thing the sisters used?

Twilight could have celestia’s powers but that wouldn’t make her a great ruler and they’re not what made celestia great either.

What made celestia great was being a kind, benevolent and wise ruler despite having all that power. How many powerfull beings in this setting actually do anything good with their power?

It’s the lessons and wisdom celestia passed to twilight that will enable twilight to rule well And the amulet is celestia gift to all her other little ponies and the generations who will come after. Now the power is shared.

Aside from the fact that the amulet thematically diminishes the importance the princesses have to Equestria, Celestia and Luna are abdicating, passing on their roles and responsibilities unto Twilight, their successor. The problem is they don’t pass on their most crucial aspect that enabled them to rule and carry out their responsibilities, their magic. Why would a great ruler on her way out keep the thing that enabled her to easily carry out her duties into retirement and not bequeath it onto to her successor, who’d most likely need it to rule as effectively as she did, let alone surpass her, like Celestia wanted Twilight to do? The amulet is not only a cop-out but is also prone to breaking or getting stolen. A great ruler entrusts her successor to reign far greater than she once did, and that includes passing on her most important responsibilities and the power to carry them out.
