Black Ashtrail is from Reins, one of Equestria’s oversea colonies. He grew in Reins with his mother Pygmy Ashtrail, the Ashtrail Industries owner. He part times as a Runner in Reins.  
Black grew up in a small gun shop in Reins, spending most of his early years building firearms with his mother. That said Black found his talent in mechanics, being said to be capable of building or augmenting anything so long as it’s mechanical in nature. Growing up he mainly uses his talents to build cyberware and helped bring in money for his mom’s shop. However, being a small shop in a world ruled by multinational corporations, making ends meet was typically difficult for them, so to keep them afloat Black also took to working Reins’ sprawl as a Runner. He keeps this second life a secret from his mother declaring that “If mom found out I was doing this she’d blow my brains out.”  
Perhaps because of this Black doesn’t work as a Runner often, typically working only when money is tight.  
Still young for a runner his main goal in life is to eventually step away from is life as a Runner.  
“That’s always easier said than done though…”
