Episodes are finished a long time before they air and even further is the content of the episode set in stone. Back in December 2007 episodes from season 8 were leaked that would not air air for another six months.
 
So no, there’s no way that something in an episode airing later in a season is the result of reactions to an episode earlier in the season.

The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows (when Cadance’s pregnancy was revealed) wasn’t until S5E19, whereas Slice of Life was S5E09. I imagine they wouldn’t have even said Cadance was pregnant if they were going to end it that season.

If they ended at Season 5, then we would still have the plot thread of Cadance being pregnant unanswered.

Dude, seasons 6-9 basically are the additional seasons. If the Slice of Life episode didn’t do well, the show would’ve ended at season 5. But the episode was well-received, so the show went on for another while.  
_{Personally, I’d love to have seen another episode or two focusing on the Background Ponies’ lives, especially Bon Bon’s/Sweetie Drops’ secret agent shenanigans. But oh well.}

I think you are dead on with the specials. The CEO said the movie model they are using (MLP movie, Trolls, Bumblebee) did well since it basically drove sales for their most important parts of the fiscal year. He also mentioned he wants that format to keep going. Cheap to make, high quality specials with toys tied to them.  
But I feel like they are going to need something semi-regular to keep people engaged in the dry periods, you know?

It won’t be the show, so it won’t be the same, but maybe we can get occasional specials. I’m suspecting it’s more comics and books, though. We’ll have to see.

oh yeah everyone will be sad the show is over. however, 9 seasons in one series is a great run for a cartoon that originated as a children’s toy commercial in the 80s

I would like to see a Season 10 before the show ends, but I know that won’t happen. I agree with the people who say it should end before it gets stale and tiresome (cough Simpsons).
 
That being said, I will be very, very sad when it does come to an end. I know it has to, but I wish it didn’t. I’m just not ready for it to end.

My thoughts:
 
Honestly, as someone who loves G4 (with waning interest lately), as much as I wish it could go on forever, all good things have to come to an end. I highly doubt a written petition is going to change Hasbro’s mind.
 
If you really feel strongly about it, I’d encourage you to just “vote” with your view and wallet. If G5 doesn’t live up to your expectations, or you’re just plain not interested in it, the best thing to do is to just not watch it. Don’t buy G5 merchandise. Maybe voice your thoughts on the new generation on social media, without being obnoxious. It may be small in the grand scheme of things, but with a company like Hasbro (who is well aware of the cultural impact G4 has made), they’ll likely start to pick up on any lack of demand for G5 and adjust accordingly. Now, given that their primary target audience is still little girls, it likely won’t make a difference as long as parents just keep buying their kids toys. But hey, in the free market, you never know. Especially since it’s been said that Hasbro wants to expand to a more mature audience.
 
I highly doubt we’ll see something like a return to FiM, but if the new generation ends up not doing as well as G4, or not making a similar cultural impact to that of G4, they may take notice of just how beloved G4 is to fans and maybe (emphasis on maybe) return to that continuity. Unlikely, but strange things have happened before.
 
Personally, I’ve accepted that G4 is ending and G5 will be coming soon, although I’m not that interested in a whole new continuity (especially if, as the leaks suggest, it ends up basically being a rehash of G4 but with different designs). So I’ll probably check out a few episodes of G5 once they come out, but I’m a little doubtful I’ll be as into it as I’ve been into G4 (part of it also has to do with my wanting to focus on other fandoms and on original content)

Still being a jerk. Honesty is like getting a pat on the back. It’s great, unless you use a baseball bat and think you are going for a home run.  
There are gentler ways to tell the truth, and harsher ways shouldn’t be used unless it is important and the person just isnt getting it no matter how many times and how hard you try.
