The one part that I thought didn’t make sense, is that “force field” that both Twilight and Rainbow Dash saw when they tried helping return color to the town. I wonder if that was just a “red herring”.

It's bad. In a good way!

Crystals are what you go with? We’ve seen the mane 6 turn grey before, and it was not a Sombra episode. Interestingly It’s Pinkie that later shows us this grey state we’d nicknamed being “Discorded” without Discord being around. So we saw this hopeless magic way before we had a name for it.

The crystals might be related? But that feels like a stretch.
