Yeah, you might be right.
In that sense, I don’t think that many meme faces have been intentionally referenced, though Derpy is kinda a callback to the old “derp face” meme. (Though, she might’ve been an animation error.)
I think a meme face would be the actual meme faces like the troll face or forever alone not just a funny face that could become a meme. i don’t even seem most of these becoming memes
Edited
None of ‘em are even memes, so I understand the annoyance you have in that.
Meme faces would be more like the Dashface, the Cheerilee :D face, the Scootaloo “chikkun” face, and maybe even Derpy’s scrunchy face.

You ganna get mooned!
The comic page Beau Skunky posted is an official release, put out in a German MLP magazine. The one you posted is a fan edit making fun of that style of vector comic. That’s the difference.
@Beau Skunky
100% agree. Too boring if there’s no variety, and it’s better to err on the side of having a lot than having none. Also, those vector comics tend to be far more horrifying than any faic ever featured on the show, IMO.
Good job ignoring everything I said.
I’ll say again: Half of the faces you people cry about these days are normal faces. Looking at this image, alone, it’s clearly evident.
It’s still an officially licensed comic by Hasbro, and my whole point with it, that you didn’t understand was, having basically no exaggerated/off-model facial expressions, or facial variety is probably worse then having “too many.”
Or at least, that’s how I feel. I apologize if I was too passive-aggressive, but if you prefer having mostly “normal” expressions, with only occasional exaggerated/comical ones that’s fine too, but don’t go too far, and get angry at every single one.
And frankly the above image is from several different episodes, if it was all from the same one, then I might agree that they need to cut down a li’l on the exaggerated expressions.

The numbers presented are flawed. Tagging on this website is far from what anyone would call ‘complete,’ and the standards by which people appear to be applying the “faic” tag have fluctuated over the years. In the compilation in OP’s pic, alone, there are at least four faces that are just normal faces.
I don’t think you guys have ever watched the earlier seasons if you think silly faces haven’t always been a part of the animator’s toolset for expressing the characters. From day one, we can flip through screenshot compilations and find silly faces, animation errors, so on and so forth.
That kinda comes off as, “It’s nice you feel that way, but your opinions/statements don’t matter.”
It kinda depends on what you consider “faic,” as there are other tags for silly faces, and not every silly expression, or off model moment has that tag, so the numbers aren’t absolute.
And honestly, maybe I’m just not bothered by the facial designs, and such. So honestly the amount doesn’t bother me.
Honestly, the character models don’t look that differently to me from past seasons, and alot of the silly faces are brief as well one could argue.
And that said, you think the first seasons were perfect? Dude, there’s hours of Youtube videos of worse animation mistakes from the first few “beloved” seasons.
Whatever you say.
Oh, so then you just want them to be constantly perfectly on-model all the time, and the facial expressions to look like this?
(This is an official German MLP magazine comic BTW.)

It’s nice that you feel that way, but that doesn’t really mean anything. See @Background Pony #7534 for some actual numbers.
Good job mixing up smear/very short frames and real models again.
I won’t start explaining the concepts of suspense of disbelief and believabity to you, just know that they don’t work like this at all.
then they would look like they used to.
The End
A true champion knows when he’s beaten.
Your point is valid, mate. Well played.
No, I didn’t make it, but honestly every season has it’s fair share of crazy faces, and honestly I don’t feel the last two seasons have any more or less then earlier ones. It’s an odd thing to get so bent over, because on this site you could find hundreds of off-model humorous expressions from every season.
@Background Pony #ABE7
Yes, because it certainly ruins the believabity of a cartoon show about magical, talking, multi-colored horses with magic butt tattoos.
If the show were up to you guys, the characters would only have 3 different expressions like those old “copy and paste” official German MLP magazine comics. >>32888
(Frankly, I’ll take the goofy more expressive “off-model” expressions, over those robot bland “perfect” expressions.)

Indeed. I, too, am offended by cartoony expressions in my cartoons. Woe is we.
This guy gets it :)
@Beau Skunky
As I’ve said, I’m not saying that seasons prior didn’t have their share of “meme faces”. I know you personally didn’t make the chart shown (or did you?), but if you did the same with any episode from Season 8, and definitely Season 9, you’ll see the amount is doubled, maybe even tripled, the amount shown.
Of course, because you coincidentally picked the one episode whose entire point it was to portray Twilight as borderline insane.
And the difference between the old and new “meme faces” is their purpose, back in the day the were used to accentuate comedic scenes, now and especially in Between Dark and Dawn they have become the standard facial expressions that also last much longer than a few frames.
I want to watch the show without having my suspense of disbelief completely shattered by these abhorrent rigs.

I’ve recently checked all the screencaps for the first 13 episodes from each season, with both the “faic” and “screencap” tags:
Season 1: 159
Season 2: 159
Season 3: 166
Season 4: 191
Season 5: 246
Season 6: 282
Season 7: 237
Season 8: 247
Season 9: 363
It’s not very reliable, but I do see a lot more screencaps having both tags in Season 9 than any other as of now…
“Not as frequent” in the “good ol’ Season 1/2 dayz,” you say?
This is all from just ONE Season 2 episode.
Also, I don’t get all the drama, because I kinda like seeing new funny/cute facial expressions. It’s like people don’t want the show to be fun anymore.
