This, I don’t agree with, I can’t stand ‘universal constant’ expectations.  
Granted, in the context that I discovered from seeing other posts about the shop-lifting idiot, yeah, that didn’t quite need to be ‘that’ aggressive, buuuuut, you foresake all right to ‘politeness’ when you commit a crime. As far as I’m concerned, as long as he didn’t injure anybody or shoot anyone, The job’s done. ‘Not’ being an asshole isn’t a requirement, it just means people aren’t gonna like him, but the reaction as if he was about to slaughter those people is blown way out of proportion.
 
Back on the other subject though, you’re both right and wrong that a policeman should try to de-escalate, primarily in that the ‘end result’ is 100% de-escalation of any threat that the criminal may pose to the other people, the officer, or themself, in that order.
 
You’re wrong in that they should just ‘always try to de-escalate’, it’s not the policeman’s job to solely de-escalate, it’s the policeman’s job to ‘protect’, everyone around them and themselves, you forfeit that protection as a criminal, but only in-so-far as ‘you’ escalate the threat level you pose. The ‘cop’s’ job is to ‘make’ you not be a threat in any way, which, inherently, can mean further escalation to ‘end’ a threat before it can harm other people.

You are right, but it is just one example out of many and the most recent one too. Regardless what the reason is, we all should at least agree about the fact that policemen should always try to deescalate a situation rather then doing the opposite.

Sadly those same stereotypes apply to the family involved too. Yes, it was absolutely unnecessary for the officers to be that on edge and aggressive to a complying family that was merely trying to shoplift. That, however, does not erase the fact that the aunt was trying to get the 4-year-old kid to shoplift in the first place. This whole thing should have gone down a lot more rationally and calmly with the aunt getting the rap for attempted shoplifting and everybody else going free.

Well someone’s going to get nailed for insubordination, reckless endangerment of civilians, police brutality, and unnecessary use of deadly force.
