Sometimes I can’t and I wouldn’t remotely describe myself as recluse or anti-social. I’m pretty good at reading people, but some are hard to read (being monotone, expressionless, passive).
Sure, English has imported several foreign words for things that English don’t really have words for (and sometimes where there already exists words). But these words are used in all media, regardless of source. – But these Japanese honourifics are only used in Japanese-related media, and not in general everyday English. That’s different. If people were to use these terms in general, then I wouldn’t had said anything, because then it would be part of the language.
But you can show what people think of other people by expression, choice of words and more. But it would require more effort than just slapping on a “I’m your close friend”-marker.
Why though? I love the English language and it uses a whole bunch of words that don’t have English equivalents.
Façade, cliché, schadenfreude, sayonara, à la carte, au contraire, avant-garde, etc.
One of my favorite things about the Japanese language is honourifics. You can see how people view you/others by this. Maybe it should catch on in English :P
If you read the manga (which is very good, by the way) you would understand why they talk like this, since it’s explained in the story.
Sure, and also very common in subtitles, but that doesn’t make it right, and I find it just as stupid every time. Those words aren’t part of English and shouldn’t be included.
It has some similarities with “Just According to Keikaku, which is the tendency to use Japanese words over English ones. But in this case, using Japanese words where English don’t tend to have words.
Yes, some English dubs do.
I view this more of an homage/stylistic choice. The author wanted it to feel like a Manga so tacked on some honourifics.
That’s how I saw it anyway. Official might not have been the correct term, but English isn’t my first language and I’m not an authority on the matter so what do I know?
Edit: aren’t there a bunch of dubs that keep the honourifics? Lucky Star, Ouran Host Club, etc

I can only see this as a joke.
It has the honourifics (san/chan) from Japanese, that isn’t used in English. That’s either as a joke, or it’s improperly written. You don’t use Japanese honourifics in English. Japanese people don’t do it either.

Think of it like an alternate reality that the setting is changed to an anime highschool troupefest and characters are place to fit their stereo typical attitudes from anime troupe personalities.
