Description

The orange pony looked at the door of her own house, watching it. It was 6 pm and she finally finished her job at the orchard. Applejack took a deep breath, before she quickly went inside. She looked around, before she saw her son sitting in the middle of the room, silent as always. Applejack sighed quietly, before she smiled and went closer to her son.

“Hey, sweetheart,” She said softly, knowing full well how much her son hates loud sounds. “How was your day?”
“Good.” Was the only response she got.
“Oh! Well, that’s great!” She said, desperately trying to keep the conversation going. “My day was pretty good too. A little boring, but good.” She added quickly, trying to see a smile on her son’s face. She didn’t see one. Her ears lowered a bit, before they perked up back again. “So, what’ya doing?”

Autumn only shrugged.

Applejack looked around, trying to find something else to say. She doesn’t want to miss another opportunity to talk to Autumn. “Well,” She began, sitting down next to Autumn. “Ya had to be doin’ something before I came, right?” The young colt turned his head towards her, before he went back to facing the wall again. “I was just thinking.” He spoke. Applejack perked up at the sound of his voice, now is her chance!

“Well, what were’ya thinkin’ about, kiddo?” She said, her smile evident in her voice. Autumn shrugged and Applejack deflated, but then he began speaking. “I was just…. thinking about tomorrow?” It sounded like a question, but Applejack still took it as a win.

“Yeah? Well, what are’ya doing tomorrow that got’ya so excited?” She asked, genuinely interested.
“Well…” Autumn said slowly, wincing a little at Applejack’s question.
“Well?” She asked with a smile. She had few ideas, maybe he is going to try singing again? Maybe he will go get some ice cream with his friends? Maybe he will-

“Blue and Cass will teach me how to fly again.”

Applejack’s thoughts stopped and her eyes widened, her ears went all the way up in alarm. There was a long silence, before Applejack gulped down the shock and looked at her son. “Sweetheart, maybe that’s….not the best idea.”

Autumn didn’t look at her, in fact, he seemed to turn even more away from her. “You can’t keep me here forever.”
“I’m not tryin’ to!” She exclaimed, but Autumn didn’t even flinch, like he would normally do when someone raised their voice. “I just….don’t think you are ready yet.” She continued, now more softly.

Autumn suddenly stood up, Applejack knew he was glaring at her under his mane. “Then when will I be ready?! It’s been 9 years mom!” Autumn said, clearly frustrated and….hurt. Hurt that his mother didn’t trust him. “You just don’t think I’m capable of flying…You think I’m useless now, don’t you?” He said after a while, the rage from before gone. Applejack quickly stood up, alarmed and panicked.

“No, no, no! ‘Course I don’t think that, Autumn!” She tried to touch his shoulder, but the young colt just slapped her hoof away with his wing.

“You don’t trust me at all anymore.”
“Autumn~~”
“I’m trying mom, I have been patient, but I don’t want to be stuck here anymore!”
“Bright Autumn, please, just listen~~”

“Why can’t you just let me be normal?!”
“Because ya aren’t!” She screamed back at him. She could see he flinched away and bit his lip right after she said it, but she couldn’t stop. “Ya are blind, Bright Autumn! I’m sorry, but ya need to realize ya can’t do everything other ponies can! Last time ya flew, ya fell and then ya were blind, just like that! Because I wasn’t there to catch ya. I can’t let that happen again.” She slammed her hoof on the floor, she opened her mouth to say more, but she stopped when she saw the tears streaming down her son’s cheeks. She put her hoof on her mouth, realizing what she said. “Autumn, sweetheart, I’m sorry~~”

The colt just turned away from her, finding his way to the stairs, heading to his room. “Whatever, Applejack.”

And at that moment, Applejack’s world slowed down. She could feel tears on her cheeks, but all that she could think about was.

“He didn’t call me mom.”
