Me for example HATED Fluttershy in this episode. Her not caring about dragons except when they’re cute and innocent struck a bad chord with me. Her basically coercing Garble to be himself when dragon culture and pony culture are completely different don’t resonate with her at all. To me Fluttershy should have been confiding in Garble instead of arguing that Spike is braver than him. Like. Spike lives in a sheltered Equestria with PONIES whereas Garble lives in the dragonlands that expect him to be tough and harsh. It’s literally not the same!
That’s like screaming at someone for not being open about their homosexuality in a foreign country where the religion has taught its’ followers to openly punish homosexuals and then just leaving back to the United States. Your values and freedoms are not the same and you’re visiting and infringing your beliefs on someone with a completely different lifestyle. That is a SHITTY THING TO DO.

Garble was hit or miss in the episode and I understand the arguments for both, but your opinions of Fluttershy intrigue me and I would like to offer a few counter-points.

You have a point that she only cared about cute baby dragons since that was literally the only reason she wanted to go in the first place. In contrast, she also had plenty of interaction with Ember and the only reason she didn’t like the teen dragons was because they were actively throwing lava-balls at spike. Remember that Fluttershy was there too, and she could have gotten seriously hurt with one stray lava-ball.

When Fluttershy talked to Garble, she only mentioned Spike after Garble called Spike weak. She was only defending her friend, citing him as stronger. Garble laughs and calls him a “pony-dragon” and Fluttershy understandably berates Garble for his mean-spirited, borderline-racist comment. That’s not like screaming at someone for not being open about their homosexuality, that’s more like berating someone for calling your friend gay.

I do think you have a point that this is all happening in the Dragon Lands and Fluttershy is a guest. She should respect Garble’s decisions, but her comments were focused on the fact that Spike’s decision to be open about himself should not be belittled. That’s just my two cents.

That’s exactly why I’m hesitant to call it a redemption. But he doesn’t seem to be antagonistic anymore which is just as good. I’ve always felt he deeply cared about dragons and preserving how they’re “supposed to be” so I don’t find it so out of left field that he’d want to save the eggs. I do agree. It would have been better if the dragons went “We’re not laughing at you for your talent choices. We’re laughing at you because YOU’RE BAD AT IT. Look we’ll help you practice more.” which would have made them seem more supporting instead of just being ordered to accept him.

One other thing. I do like that we got to see hidden depths to him in this episode, but I still didn’t like the way it was done too much. At no point does he show any real guilt for the misdeeds he’s done, and for the most part it really is more about him being frustrated about not being able to express himself. It’s a pretty understandable plight, but it doesn’t really taste of redemption, since it’s a rather self-centered problem. Only when he was shown willing to humilliate himself to save the eggs do we finally get to see him do something noble… but it happens with no set-up whatsoever, since we’re never shown him caring about the eggs, or about anyone but his sister before. Also… ugh. I do wish they’d put a little more effort into his poems. Just because he’s supposed to be an amateur doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyable. Remember how funny and memorable Maud’s rock poems were? I do. But for the life of me, I can’t remember any of the words of Gar-Gar’s little beat session, and this was his ONLY friggin time to shine!

No you’re absolutely right. It’s not just the characters it’s the creators. In fact it’s ONLY the creators. They made no effort to make him an engaging foe or even a likeable one. He is arguably the most handsome speaking dragon and still his design seems to completely contrast that of Spikes. He’s jagged and rough on the eyes. If the studios wanted to make him a compelling villain they could have but the truth is they hardly even count him as so. So no it’s not entirely the fandoms’ fault. Because of how he’s designed and portrayed it would almost make more sense for him not to have any development at all but Garble has been a stick in the characters’ side for a long time. If they couldn’t solve such a simple problem it makes little sense that they should be able to solve bigger ones. So yeah I get the hate. Where he lacks for me is just what makes me hope for and cheer him on more.

Okay, I actually typed down a huge reply, but… frig it! Better to go piecemeal. Let’s start with just one question. Why do people hate Garble?

Because he’s a jerk, I hear the crowds yell.

Nonsense. Characters aren’t people. We don’t care if they’re nice or naughty. We only care about whether they’re engaging, interesting, or funny. That’s why so many villains get so much love. So why not Garble?

Well, let’s not beat about the bush here. Yeah, his looks don’t help him. I myself took a long while to grow to appreciate not just his design, but those of the dragons in general. I actually have grown to like them quite a bit now. That goofy face like a old broken shoe? Aw, yeah. That’s the stuff. :D

But it’s not just the fans. I mean, did you ever get the impression yourself that the show itself ever tried to do anything interesting with him? I mean, giving him a villain song would have been pretty sweet. Some secret scenes of him privately confessing his real feelings a-la Helga from Hey Arnold would have been amazing. Flashbacks to him being a wee dragon trying to protect his sister by appearing to be more tough than her really was, or trying to live up to family expectations would have been thought-provoking. Instead, we got him insulting Spike and crashing into rocks. That’s pretty basic, and it really comes down to one thing. If the writers clearly didn’t give a toss about him, it leaves all the work of developing him to the fans. And if the fans don’t like what they’re given to work with, well…

One last note. I’ve only drawn Garble once, and it was rather fun. It… um… it could be called a Garble-abuse image, I suppose. But hey, I think this is one case where making him a victim actually did more to make him sympathetic than most of his episodes ever did!

You don’t have to worry about hurting my feelings because at the end of the day it IS just a fictional character but thank you for being so considerate. With that out the way you honestly don’t have to debate me at all. I like debating and don’t want people to misconstrue accusations as attacks on anyone’s’ character. I accept that people don’t like Garble despite how much I want him to be a better character. Personally as much as I wanted him to get his “moment” I felt people were justified in hating him. I think even after now people are STILL justified in hating him.

It’s just my personal opinion that no matter how you justify it, Garble is antagonistic. But antagonists are always obstacles to overcome. If you show friendship to someone just as bad or even worse than him you have to ask why someone who is more petty doesn’t get the same kind of offer.

I mean Queen Chrysalis has dominated Equestria twice now (Thrice if you include the alternate future) and even she’s been offered a chance to change. (Which she refused. Which was awesome) But when it comes to characters not as evil it feels unfair that they don’t get offered the same chance. That’s all that ticks me off about how people treat Garble. I don’t deny he’s a bad character but I also feel the characters would have tried to see where he was coming from way earlier than this episode.

Consistency in your concepts of friendship even to those who deny it is what bothers me. You claim to want to be a fighter for friendship but Garble has been relegated as a joke not to be taken seriously for the longest time. And now that Garble has shown to have a lighter side it just feels rude to still put him down and hate him.

But as I said before. You can hate who you want. Me for example HATED Fluttershy in this episode. Her not caring about dragons except when they’re cute and innocent struck a bad chord with me. Her basically coercing Garble to be himself when dragon culture and pony culture are completely different don’t resonate with her at all. I’m sorry for the long rant but the point I’m making is that despite Garble being a horrible person, if you want to preach that friendship is the ultimate power then relegate that message to EVERYONE not just the people you like. It’s hypocritical. Also you’re free to like and hate who you want.

Hrm…
Okay, first off, my apologies. I don’t mind razzing Garble, because he’s fictional. He doesn’t care, so why should I? That said, YOU are not fictional, and I did kinda poked ya in the ribs there, so… yes. Apologies are in order.

I do wanna talk more about this, because… you know… debates ARE fun, or can be, if everyone’s okay with it. Hell, they’re half the fun of being a fan, but it seems better to start off on the right foot. Would you be okay with me debating with you? I’m sure I’m gonna be disagreeing with you a lot, but I have no desire to make you feel bad.

Bruh he literally stopped being a bully by the end of the episode even praising Spike for helping him come up with the idea. There’s literally no justification for this shit anymore. You guys just can’t stand that he’s not an antagonist anymore. Which honestly is FINE you can hate who you want.
