That’s how it’s spelled outside the US and possibly Canada. In fact, I can’t think of many words where a singular non-clustered S is pronounced S after the first letter of a word where there isn’t an alternate pronunciation of that same spelling (close, for example), off the top of my head, I can only think of “yes”.
In fact, Z serves less purpose in English as C. Z can’t make clusters, X is pronounced Z when word-initial, S is pronounced Z when not word-initial unless it’s doubled or in a cluster. You could remove the letter from non-American forms of English and very little would change, only a few words like “seizure” would need to find a workaround. There’s a reason Scrabble only has one of these.
Zee may not be as useless, but Zed is only slightly more useful than a screen door on a submarine.
