Blue light gets scattered by the atmosphere; red light passes through. The air refracts the light just enough to bend it into the planet’s shadow. Thus, when the Moon goes into the Earth’s shadow, it looks red.
 
Put another way, if you stood on the Moon’s surface during a total lunar eclipse and looked up at Earth, you would be seeing every sunrise and sunset on the planet all at once as a red ring of light around the silhouetted planet.
