I realized later that Quibble Pants is an Earth pony. Clear Sky being a Unicorn and Wind Sprints being a Pegasus gives them a full set of players for a buckball team. I suspect that’s where the writers were actually going with this.

I wouldn’t really call that “shoehorned diversity” Pinkie Pie was originally going to be a Pegasus and now she’s an Earth Pony. It happens.
I’m wondering if this was a case of executive meddling. We would expect Quibble Pants to be dating another pegasus, who had a pegasus child (with presumably a pegasus ex-dad). Making Clear Sky a unicorn may have been some shoe-horned diversity.

Salty, much? Clear Skies was a literal joke character who was only onscreen for a few lines in a single episode (Tanks for the Memories). Her entire purpose was to be an MLP parody of the “Who’s on First?” sketch by Abbott & Costello, along with the other characters that appeared during that brief scene. It’s well within the writers’ rights to choose a similar name for a different character, especially if it’s not literally the same.
