Sort of depends on your definition of dark. There is (almost) no explicit violence, but it definitely fit the bill for me (it was eerie / eldritch to the point that other stories never managed to reach through simple gore). I really liked the story, but it absolutely deserves the tag.

[Adjusts the description] I don’t know, IMO it’s definitely not for everyone so I thought a warning on a “safe” image would be appropriate. It’s not that dark of a fic, yeah, but we do have a “semi-grimdark” tag on this site, right?

For the record, The Archetypist is not a darkfic, and it is not marked as such. No one dies, and no one is tortured, except for maybe for Twilight’s expectations as well as those of a few hypersensitive readers. It’s a story that could easily have headed in that direction, but it did not. Excellent story. And lovely art. ;)
