So, this sort of thing is a mixture of and inspired by the comics and a headcanon/idea that Vindhov had (and pulled off much better I might add, please check them out: www.deviantart.com/vindhov/art…)
 
I never read the comics and didn’t know about the disguise Discord made for Celestia until very recently. In fact I was looking at stuff for the Fluttershy family nextgen stuff I was writing, happened to see that Flutter’s mom looks like a certain comic pony I can’t remember the name of, and then Celestia and Discord were almost right under them and found it out that way lol.
 
But, for some reason the idea really stuck with me and I wanted to convert those ponies to “show style,” and in a similar fashion to the artist I mentioned above, wanted to make a design for each race of ponies like they had done with Celestia and do it for Celestia and Discord.  
I also liked the idea of her checking up on how her subjects are doing as well as just needing some time out without the attention.
 
I feel they loose a lot of their character the way I did the second one. I:
 
However I still like it, and I love the last one for Celestia.
 
I also headcanon that even though he is hiding who he is, Discord’s not really trying too hard to hide who he is lmfao
 
I only made 3 of these designs but still lol.
 
In the first one, Celestia’s mane and tail are based off of a lot of background ponies’ manes like Lyra and Amethyst star and stuff. Discord’s is just the one he used in the S4 finale. Celestia’s CM is a crown, which obvs represents her princesshood
 
The second are based entirely off the comic book ones. I kinda just guessed/went with what was hinted at for eye colors lol. I also just made some adjustments to the mane and tail from the original on Celestia. Cms are the same, the lightbulb and the plug in.
 
The 3rd one I based Discord’s look a tad bit on the most popular John De Lancie pony design (though it’s leaning more towards Discord’s actual mane style.) The Tail is braeburn’s.  
and for Celestia, her eye color and body color are taken from/inspired by (respectively) by her sunbutt cutie mark. Her hair’s design was based off of Cherry Jubilee’s, and she basically just has her tail with a few adjustments.  
(Side note it kinda seemed like Earth ponies have the most extravagant hairstyles outside of Rarity lol.)  
The CM for Discord is of course is a chocolate rain cotton candy cloud lol. Celestia’s is a scroll and a quill. It’s supposed to represent the mentor aspect of her.
 
I based the manes off of preexisting ones to try and get them to look like they could blend in a lot more easily but they’re still too distinctive IMO lmfao.
 
I like to think they all have a different way of interacting with each other depending on form. The first are married to each other, the second are just bffs, and the 3rd maybe fight with each other a lot and cause chaos? I’m not sure about that last one lmfao.
