My guess is it has something to do with that knowing glance shared between Kitephile and Shut In in the third panel.
 
My second guess is that she goes out like this and meets a new stallion who breaks her heart when her normal colors return.

Guilty.  
I did this to someone in my Air Force squadron once. Mixed a small amount of peroxide into his shampoo so it happened gradually. By the end of a 30-day deployment he’d gone from brown hair to completely blonde. Dude never caught on…he blamed it on being out in the Mediterranean sun all day.
