The pendants are their cutie marks. Upon transformation, they probbly turn into cutie marks. Makes sense that they would be a source of magic as the mane six lost their abilities when they lost their cutiemarks in S05E01/02 , and AB could do all kinds of things she wouldn’t normally be able to do in the cutie pox.
