The writers stopped caring about coherent continuity a looooong time ago, so characters will do whatever the plot requires, even if it flies in the face of previous development
I don’t think that’s the case at all. Besides, there is such a thing as “friendly rivalry”. It is entirely possible to like someone and get along great with them while also having a longstanding competition between you and them.
