Description

It was months after the curse. A long, long while. She did have twins, as the curse spoke of. But….it was not her children she was concerned for. It was her marriage. Her and Starlight had been together for three years. But….it was going downhill quickly. The spark that was there when they married was gone. The unicorn had never done Rarity wrong but….Rarity knew it was unfair to Starlight to stay in a one-sided relationship. Rarity simply….didn’t love the mare anymore. Starlight always stayed home and spent time with her friends and the children while Rarity toured Equestria with her newest outfits and work. There was just not enough time anymore. So….that’s why Rarity wished for Starlight to have custody. Rarity was a good mother, she knew that. But she didn’t want her children to grow up thinking they were second to her work. Spotlight and Skylight didn’t deserve that. She walked through the door, not physically ready to give Starlight the information, but mentally, she knew she had to. Starlight grinned, seeing her wife enter the door.
“Hi, darling! How was your trip?” Starlight asked, genuinely curious. The joy on the mare’s face hurt Rarity, knowing what she was about to say would shatter Starlight.
“Star, sweetie….we need to have a talk.” Rarity sighed, walking past her. She began to shift things around the house, picking up toys and clothes.
“Why? What’s wrong?” Starlight questioned, suddenly worried. Rarity sighed once more, before holding her head high and turning to look at her wife. It was for the best.
“I need….we need, to divorce.” Rarity said bluntly, but the pain in her throat was intense as she resisted the urge to run out of the room.
“W-what?” Starlight stuttered, shocked. Rarity’s eyes dropped, knowing Starlight wasn’t processing what she had just said.
“It’s….better for both of us if we do. It’s not right for you to stay with me because….I don’t want you anymore. And you deserve somepony who does love you back. You’re an amazing mare, Starlight. I just….I don’t feel a connection between us anymore.” Rarity explained, hoping that would make it easier on the purple mare.
“But….but I love you. Isn’t that enough? I….I can fix it, I can! I know I can, please, Rarity don’t….don’t do this to me….!” Starlight panicked, her voice raising. Rarity felt a pain in her chest at the mare’s horror. She spoke calmly, hoping to defuse Starlight’s emotions.
“Starlight….it’s wrong for you to stay in a relationship where you aren’t loved in return. You deserve better than that. It’s unfair to you-”
“I don’t care!” Starlight suddenly yelled, a spark emitting from her horn. “I love you! It doesn’t matter if you don’t love me, I….I need you! Please….I’ll do anything but please just….please stay. Please stay with me.” Rarity took a step back. It was so difficult to say the next word.
“No.” Rarity said strongly.
“Why?!” Starlight screamed.
“Because, I-” Rarity could barely speak the next words as they sounded harsh, but she knew it’s what Starlight needed to hear. “Because I don’t love you anymore.” Starlight stepped back in shock, and ran out the back door into the dark night, broken. Rarity was left alone in her boutique, with a silent heart.

***
Wow. This one hit a little close to home for me with my last breakup. A lot of personal experience was in Starlight’s words. Sadly, my past relationship didn’t end out of my other “looking out” for me. But I’m much happier and have become a stronger and better person because of what happened. I encourage everyone to be happy with themselves and loves themselves first! Even if you’re in a relationship, your happiness is important. Don’t undermine yourself! Live and love! Be happy! ^^
