Background/Personality:
Harvest Dusk, or “Scruff”, is the foster son of Fluttershy. Born in the Bat Pony Colonies, Scruff entered the Equestrian Foster System early in his life, jumping from one family to the next. Scruff suffered in the foster system: the bat colt never seemed to fit in anywhere, whether it be with families, school, or any friend group. After his seventh family, Scruff gave up on trying to connect with anyone: why love someone when they’ll just be gone tomorrow? By his early teenage years, the EFS seemed to give up on placing Scruff in a more permanent situation until a social worker from Ponyville suggested they place Scruff with a pony named Fluttershy, a pegasus known for her kindness. With no other option, the EFS decided to ask this Fluttershy if she was willing to home the now angsty bat stallion. Not one to turn a pony in need, Fluttershy welcomed Scruff into her cabin, of which the bat stallion seemed indifferent. Scruff never lived outside the bat colonies before moving in with Fluttershy, Speckle Heart, and Sandy Feathers, and now the already troubled bat pony seemed more out of place among regular ponies; however, Fluttershy never let the bat stallion sulk for too long, instead creating structure and responsibility for Scruff, something he never had before. Eventually, Scruff grew comfortable in Ponyville and finally learned to make a few friends. However, Scruff’s more “scruffy” habits never left the bat stallion: Scruff never takes school seriously, instead opting to skip class and hang around darker places in Ponyville to tag his signature on anything with a large surface. Being a bat pony, Scruff also enjoys the nightlife more than the daylight, the stallion often flying off into the night to visit Canterlot’s underground lounges where his talents blossom (surprisingly in poetry, which he presents as rap). Eventually Scruff will leave the EFS and can decide for himself where he will finally settle; however, the bat stallion feels Ponyville is the only place he ever really felt home.

Scruff presents himself as a distant and cool stallion who does not care to follow rules unless they are his own. Growing up without any early structure, Scruff felt he never needed anyone but himself, and so often dismissed any pony who tried to grow closer. However, underneath the scruffy and dulled auburn fur is a warm bat pony who wants to share his feelings. Only a few ponies have managed to see this inner warmth, and those who have seen it bask in the warmth. This warmth only escapes the scruffy crust when Scruff is practicing his talents in words, mostly through poetic rap battles. Alongside his “cool stallion” facade, Scruff claims to be the smoothest talker around, making all the ponies (mare or stallion) swoon and blush over his warm eyes and cool words.

Relationships:

Scruff does not really remember his biological parents: his social workers never told the bat pony why he left them. Scruff never felt close enough to any pony to consider them family until he moved in with Fluttershy. Now, Scruff loves Fluttershy as if she was his mother since birth and will defend her in any situation.

Although the foster system gave Scruff enough “siblings” to spare, Scruff always felt he was an only child merely trying to survive. Once the bat pony moved in with Fluttershy, Speckle Heart immediately called Scruff his “little brother”, sparing no time in making sure the bat pony felt welcome in Ponyville. Meanwhile, Scruff seems to take a more “big brother” role towards little Johari who he affectionately calls “Jo-jo” and lets her sleep beside his fluffy body during nap time. As for Sandy Feathers, Scruff does not really know how to feel about the nature loving pegasus: he occasionally helps the smaller pegasus pick twigs and leaves out of his mane.

As a foster pony, Scruff is not legally related to any of Fluttershy’s family; however, that does not stop Fluttershy from telling Scruff what his “cousins” did the other day. Scruff sometimes helps Feather Dart set up flying courses or giving “cool” lessons (which he thinks Dart desperately needs).

There seems to be only one pony in Ponyville that Scruff actually considers a true friend, Macoun “Mack” Apple. Mack was the first pony that the bat pony met after arriving in Ponyville, even the first nice pony Scruff ever met (even before Fluttershy). Scruff found a genuine friendship with Mack and will do anything for the earth pony. Scruff also may or may not love teasing the apple pony with flirty comments, making Mack blush like crazy.

Special:
  • Scruff’s cutie mark is paint splatter with a microphone with bat wings. The cutie mark symbolizes Scruff’s talent in creating art, especially in poetry which he forms into rap songs. Scruff is also a talented graffiti artist.
  • Although Scruff hates school, the bat pony excels in his writing classes, especially in poetry. Ponies try to encourage Scruff into entering poetry contests, but Scruff feels his poetry is only good as rap battles, aka “not exactly what the judges are looking for”.
  • Scruff keeps a “secret” poetry book with snip its of his own poetry stashed in, and he considers this books his only true treasure.
  • Although it takes a while to understand, Scruff eventually goes from teasing Macoun with flirty comments to actually crushing on the earth pony hard. However, Scruff does not find it “cool” to act on pansy feelings such as romance, at least without encouragement.
  • Scruff’s language is pretty vulgar, the bat pony swearing more often than not. Scruff tries his best not to swear when around Johari and other foals; however, the occasional word slips out under his breath.
  • Scruff frequently helps Fluttershy with her animal sanctuary, especially with the nocturnal animals. Scruff finds comfort in helping these fellow animals of the night: Scruff even calls a few fruit bats his pets.
