Description

It was a rather quiet day in the Crystal Empire. Very few ponies crowded the streets - many preoccupied by work or the like - and the howling flurries of snowstorms that waited just outside of the protective barrier of the Empire’s magic even seemed gentler. All in all, it was a perfect day for the visiting Dragonlord Ember and her love, Princess Flurry Heart, to spend a peaceful afternoon out with their young dracony foal. The two walked through the glimmering streets, past columns of shimmering crystals and polished buildings and pillars, Flurry chattering happily and occasionally fussing at Ember and baby Frostbite with her wingtips. Ember, uncharacteristically some might imagine, held the colt in her arms as they strode along. Back in the Dragonlands she wouldn’t dare to show affection so openly - as the ruler of the Dragonlands for so many years now, Ember had to constantly remain imposing in front of the other dragons. However, here in the Crystal Empire, even if she might be loathe to admit it later, Ember was happy to be able to show attention to her lover and son in her own ways. As they walked, Flurry pointed out adjustments in the city or explained recent happenings that she found interesting - some Ember had heard before, but nonetheless she listened.

Suddenly, the wriggling bundle of fur, scales, and feathers in her arms writhed even more fiercely, and Ember couldn’t help but grin at Frostbite’s energy. The young dracony showed a lot of independence and tenacity, traits she hoped would make him a good candidate to replace her someday - even despite his more ponylike shape. She loosened her grip a bit, preparing to lower the colt to the ground so he could stand on his own feet. With a grating whinnying noise like claws on a chalkboard Frostbite broke free of her grip early, instead launching himself forward and flapping his small wings fiercely. His face was scrunched in determination as he struggled for a moment and nearly hit the crystalline streets, barely catching himself and lifting his body into the air. All the while his wings beat quickly, struggling with their diminutive size and musculature to keep him aloft.

Flurry let out a joyful noise at the sight, shifting her wings animatedly and grinning at her foal’s achievement. While it was common for young pegasi or alicorns to develop short bouts of flight early on, it was nonetheless exciting for the Princess to see her son’s first flight. Ember watched the display with an almost dumbstruck look of surprise, almost awe. Among dragons, many dragons weren’t born with wings - she had accepted that part of Frostbite log ago however - but even those who were born winged took a long time to learn to fly and it was unheard of for young hatchlings. “He’s… I-is this normal?” She asked the white furred alicorn beside her suddenly.

“Absolutely!” Flurry cheered. The Princess reached out the full length of her wings as Frostbite made a clunky descent towards her and wrapped her wings about now exhausted foal. “You should’ve seen me when I was a foal! Zipping back and forth quick as a snow flurry. Got in lots of trouble,” Flurry Heart explained with a mischievous expression. “If you believe my parents, it’ll only get worse from here!” She continued, a smile in her tone.

By now Ember had smoothed out her astonished face, instead looking thoughtfully - and perhaps still a bit uncertainly - at the dracony colt enveloped in Flurry’s wings. Her mouth split into a self-assured grin smoothly after a moment, back to displaying constant confidence. “Trouble? I’ll have to tell you about the trouble dragon hatchlings like to get into.”

A little scenario with some headcanon of mine mixed in. In a later part of the timeline for my verse (Bijuverse), Flurry Heart has a foal with Dragonlord Ember - though not quite intentional, as Frostbite was born (As I’ve mentioned previously) through the magic in the deep love between the two. Being a strange magical spawn of alicorn and dragon, it was hard to know what to expect, though Flurry knew if Frost was half as much of a handful as her parents told her she was as a filly, he’d be a fun heap of trouble. Dragons (in my headcanon) don’t fly early - even those born with wings.

Background is an admittedly lazy redraw/reshade sketched up from a screenshot that I cannot find despite trying at this time, but once I do will link back to. (If someone else knows which screenshot this is or where a similar one comes from please let me know and I’ll link to it.)
