Also, the early Germanic people’s fear to name bears may have done us out of a rhyming mnemonic for remembering polar bears and emperor penguins live a world apart. Proto-Indo-European *h₂əŕtḱos† would probably have yielded in Proto-Germanic something like *urþaz, Old English *orþ, Modern English *orth.
