Grog isn’t actually stored in barrels - Grog is what you get when you water down Rum Rations and was issued to Sailors daily at 11am (with officers allowed undiluted Rum Rations, but was discontinued in the American navy in 1862, but for the British Royal Navy, this was only stopped as recently as 1970.
