Since we saw that one Kirin using magic to accelerate a plants growth, I can only assume they naturally have the full complement of earth pony magic, to include their muscular strength.
But now I’m also imagining Diamond Dogs in the heat of battle digging through the earth unnaturally fast and effortlessly, only to plop a live and active landmine right by their enemies feet and immediately vanishing underground before it detonates. :p
Safe from arrows and gryphons and pegasi but vulnerable to diamond dogs and landmines and other threats from below. Evolution has clearly selected that fatal threats to the kirin are near-exclusively from above and not below (I bet their scales are pretty heavy due to their metallic nature).
Kirin armor, but their soft underside is still unprotected…
So more like traditional dragon scales, then. The way they’re drawn here makes them look like a built-in skirt of metallic armor.

I think it was suggested (or illustrated) that they’re a semi-metallic material, or perhaps a flexible mesh with embedded metallics.
So…(semi-)metallic feathers? I want that to be a thing!

Me too, I really like her semi-realistic style, and the fact that it’s traditional art.
