The heart necklace among a lot of other things strongly suggest that Hasbro sees it differently. But, of course, we’re all free to ship or not ship who we want.

(…and now you’ve read the entire long and dramatic thread summed up in two sentences. :p )

I have seen it in both junior high and high school, with close girlfriends. But this is also in what I would consider the more traditional areas of the country where I’ve seen this (eg upper-middle suburbia). It’s definitely a product of the upbringing/region. I wouldn’t expect to see it much in a inner city school, for example.

But I will stress that it is one of the few types of PDA (public displays of affection) that no one looks twice towards. Girl/boy, or boy/boy, despite society accepting these things now, do take question when that’s being visible. So when we have Flashlight on the EQG films, you’ll notice they are VERY careful in handling it. And in the show, when it was big in H&HD, it was specifically framed around a day that we would normally consider that acceptable for hetero couples.

@martianmister
Yes, even cheek rubbing I’ve seen IRL between life-long close friend that had no indication of any other level of relationship beyond the platonic one.

You sorta have to take yourself out of brony mode to see what I’ve saying: this actions either go by so fast or have no immediate context if you’re not wiring your mind to see it, so it’s perfectly innocent to the soccer mom. And keep in mind that there’s people at Hasbro that are checking these, and they’re going to be very aware of introducing any possible hint of a lesbian couple.

I do believe that DHX is storyboarding these scenes with the innuendo and are able to squeak it by, but because they stay far from that line (and have Hasbro’s blessing) they can always fall back to say “what shipping?”

Here’s the thing though, people are quick to say “this is just what best friends do” while i have never seen best friends do all of that, not girls, not teenagers, neither in my country or american reallife television. Doing the cheek kiss greeting is not the same as touching each other cheeks during a piano play.

Oh, i do remember though in the sitcom “friends”, whenever some of the female friends happened to get in a situation where they were a bit too close, they would lampshade it with stuff like “Are we in Joeys imagination?” implying that they know this close contact is not normal and normally reserved for lesbians.

Magical girl shows are entitled to have that couple that everyone knows are lesbians but they either never outright confirm it, try to shoehorn in a male character to date one of them, make one of them psychotic to try and derail the ship, or just brush it off as cousins or friends.

The one thing to keep in mind is that all depictions of Lyra/BonBon in show or EQG side fit perfectly fine with the platonic relationship that two life-long female friends of this age have. They’ll do everything together, lock arms to walk, touch caring, etc. but that’s just part of the friendship and absolutely nothing to imply anything like romance or the like.

We see that because we’ve collectively have the whole headcanon aspect, and its easy to take nearly all of these same actions to imply romance. But to the soccer moms and young girls who have no idea of our wild ideas, their behavior and the way the show/movies present it is squeaky clean. And this is probably why DHX loves to use these two this way because they can get away with dropping fandom nods without crossing any lines as long as they are careful.

“If they want to read into it, it’s up to them.” Exactly what I’ve been saying, these little gags are just to try to acknowledge it without making it official. Stop trying to force them, shippers and anti-shippers alike!
And no, it’s not pandering, it’s merely a nod to the fact that the fandom exists–pandering would be, say, a kiss.
In summary: SHUT UP, EVERYONE, LET US HAVE THE TEASES AND BE DONE WITH IT.

Coming back around to the necklace thing again. I want any shipper that uses that as evidence of a canon romantic relationship to go to the search engine of their choosing and do a search for “friendship heart charm”. Let me know what you find.

And again, hearts are common motifs for girls and is not mutually exclusive to romance.
Do you see how many hearts are in this thing?
full

I mean if heart = romance in MLP then every time a character is off-camera they must be furiously making out with whoever they’re standing next to. (Sadly, I’m sure there is some shipper out there that actually believes this)

Uh huh. Or they’re just close friends, because you can’t just point to one instance and have to cite the “big picture” and “they’re pandering to us” as proof of your headcanon being “confirmed”.

@Phantom Rider
Don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely told my friends I love them. However, I’ve never told my friends that I’m IN love with them.

I’ve also never seen a non-romantic situation in any show end with a heart-shaped iris-out. And then there’s the title screen here (the title itself, the word “love” emphasized, and the frikkin’ image is half-heart cutie mark necklaces that fit together. Which I will be crushed if it turns out no enterprising fan is actually making these. Sadly not present in the short itself, but still, the folks involved in the making on this chose to put that in.

Again, you have to see the whole picture, not just one or two instances.

The biggest offender, episode 100 as a whole. It was an episode directly referencing fandom and making it canon. Like Derpy/Whooves being close to each other and the whole Dr.Who thing. And of course Lyra/Bon. Aside for Lyras love for hands and sitting like humans(which was both referenced as well), the one thing they are know for in the fandom: Being a couple. And now in that episode they had soooo many close moments, the one episode that made references to fandom, and CONSTANTLY mentioned they are “beeestest of friends”

in other words, it’s a meta example.

But if you want more, the closeness of their piano playing, sorry, if you do that with your friend, you are a couple. That’s not what friends do. And also they OVERLY JOY of being joined together and the hips in the dream episode. If you think that is just “we are such bestest friends” moment, someone needs to have a talk with your parents to give you a talk about proper social behavior.

And of course the constant hugging, arm/hoof holding, bedroom eyes, being together.

The mane6 are friends, and you don’t see them doing that constantly like that, because they ARE just friend. The most they do is occasional group hugging, and maybe after a long adventure/friendship-problem hugging between two.
