Maybe there was more than one Clover the Clever. People name their kids after famous figures sometimes.
Well the show isn’t known for it’s consistency on the small details like this.
Recently, I became aware of conflicting info. As folks have said, “Forgotten Friendship” did state that Clover was male and had a cloak similar to what Twilight wore in the play.
However, “A Matter of Principals” showed a portrait of a female Clover with a much more regal cloak. So… yeah, we’ve been told that Clover is both a stallion and a mare, and I’m not sure which is more reliable.

Don’t think it was specified in the show, and the play in season 1 had the Mane Six play characters that were male, so it’s not a good source of info.
