“Almost anypony in Equestria could tell you the tale of Hearth’s Warming Eve: how the three races of earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns, put aside their differences and came together to found the nation of Equestria.

But few know the story of how it almost went horribly wrong.

After the leaders of each race left on their journeys to find a new land, Star Swirl grew increasingly worried about the outcome. Unable to bear the uncertainty, he dared to tap into the dark field of Divination Magic to try to foresee the future. Submerged in his visions, he became filled with signs of hope, signs of peace, and signs of unity for all—exactly as he wanted.

But what he also saw was a draconequus, an invasion of insectoid changelings, a corrupted empire, and an alien alicorn.
Clouded by these dark visions, he became greatly disturbed. But being the scholar he was, he knew what he saw could be changed. The past may be set in stone, but the future never is, and there is never just one way to peace or any other desired outcome.

Burying himself in his scrolls and visions, he sought for a solution for the coming crisis. Eventually he discovered a way that would save them all. The long-term consequences brought less promise of peace, but he had supposed he could correct for this later.

The main outcome of this alteration: ponykind would never unite, and instead each race would become their own, autonomous nation.

Star Swirl started his plans in secret, plotting long into the night over his maps and spell books. However, one of his apprentices had been spying on him, and one day demanded to know what he was doing. Flabbergasted, Star Swirl tried to hide that he’d been illegally scrying, but then he came up with an idea. Star Swirl had neither the energy nor the capacity to survive in the wilderness to complete the tasks at hoof: to divert the paths of the pony leaders so they would never meet in the new land. But an apprentice, under his guiding hoof, could. He explained to her his plan, his visions, even the consequences. He showed his apprentice how unicorns, pegasi, and earth ponies could live without the others; how nature could take over without the presence of pony magic; how, with the malleable nature of time, it could take but simple actions to divert the course of history forever.

And then he asked for her aid.

His apprentice would never be credited for what she had to do, nor would there be any songs about her—no eulogies nor tales of her sacrifice. Her name would be cast away in the endless void of time as if she had never existed. But she selflessly agreed to the plan, for the hope that all the ponies of Earth, Pegasopolis, and Unicornia, might live in a brighter future. Together, with a willing host, with Star Swirl’s magic, and with good intention, they split the path of history forever.

And so, in another time, in another history, Equestria was never created.”
