Okay, so the show’s staff realize that Sandbar is pretty damn milquetoast. They realize they haveta pick one of two paths. Either A: flesh him out to make him more interesting, or B: make his blandness his strength by focusing on how the fact that he’s not a conflicted or terribly flawed character may not lead to particularly intriguing stories, but does make him a pleasant companion and an endearing friend. Also, play up on this fact for laughs by making him the target of gentle teasing, having his ‘traumatic’ Hearth’s Warming Even story be intentionally lame, and his nightmare scene be something as inoccuous as not being able to choose a cake.
Okay, so they went with B. Was that the best choice? Well, I loved it, and they did a fine job in that regard, as far as my opinion is concerned. But if you had prefered they went with A, I can hardly blame you. It would have been a solid choice as well.
I find him more interesting than Smolder honestly. Mainly because I got bored with the whole edgy “dragons love violence and despair and hate friendship” thing which is pretty much her only shtick.
Well, there’s also the fact that being kind of lame and not special is part of Sandbar’s personal problems. I mean, look at his friendship test: He’s happy that he’s finally getting a friendship adventure, and it takes him the longest out of all students to finally tear himself away from it.
Maybe surfer dude pone is painfully aware of how unspecial he is, especially compared to all the exotic creatures around him. He’s just there. When Cozy Glow falsely claimed it was only due to Sandbar’s help that all the non-ponies succeeded to such an extent, he was put on the spot and didn’t know how to handle it. Because it’s not true. They don’t need him. He’s just there.
If he wasn’t so chill, that might actually hurt him quite a lot.
after thinking, i realized the reason: is so he doesn’t overshadows the “otger creatures” of his group.
Basically, yes. As they say in Equestria, “Pony is the measure of all things.” We see the eccentricities of the other members of the Student Six by comparing them with poor Sandbar here.
Maybe
racist much?
Hilarious in Hindsight indeed! ^^
“Does anyone else get that feeling?”

Yep.
Comics don’t count
He did in the finale
That depends.
That break in sterotype is itself, a rather predictable stereotype.
“I like girly things too” basically rainbow dash with the spa, nothing new
Well… in that case, What Lies Beneath should have been interesting to you, right?
