Next in my Dawnverse headcanon, the Royal Family!

A few changes here, some small and one large: the grandest change is to the design and story of Princess Serena (she’s gold now!). I also made Princess Viola Noctre and Prince Somnium taller. Below is some information on the Royal Family:

Princess Celestia:
After the banishment of her sister to the moon, Princess Celestia faced ruling Equestria by herself, a daunting task for the younger alicorn. The princess accepted her fate, and so ruled over her pony subjects as a monarchy. Although the ponies of Equestria revered their ruler as a perfect deity, Celestia saw herself as merely a mare who grew lonely without her sister by her side. Craving the closeness of family, Celestia began searching for suitors to produce her own heir. Within only a few years after the banishment of the moon princess, Equestria welcomed a new Prince Consort and a baby prince, and Celestia felt at peace. However, just like mortal life, the feelings were temporary. Over her 1000 monarchy, Celestia courted multiple stallions and produced multiple heirs, all falling to mortality before the eternal princess. None of this stopped Princess Celestia: her heirs from the past produced their own children, and so on and so forth, allowing multiple ponies to claim a blood relation to the regal sun princess. Even the return of her sister Princess Luna did not stop Celestia from seeking companionship from stallions who help produce an heir. With each new heir came a new pony to occupy a royal position. Presently, Celestia found companionship in a mighty stallion, Rockhoof the Element of Strength from the Pillars of Old Equestria. Celestia found enjoyment from Rockhoof’s tall tales and historical events (some of which Celestia herself witnessed in her youth), the two bonding over a shared melancholy connection to the past. From their union came a golden mare named Serena. Just as in the past, Equestria raved and welcomed their newest princess the day of the golden mare’s birth.

As a mother, Princess Celestia is as warm as her sun. Celestia enjoys spending quality time with her newest daughter, the two bonding over tea and innocent trickery. Although many ponies can claim a relation to the sun princess, Celestia treats Serena as if she was her only child in life.

Fun Facts:
- Celestia, like other ancient alicorns, is eternal rather than immortal.
- Celestia loves playing innocent tricks on other ponies, such as whoopie cushions, popping out from behind curtains, and tricking ponies into causing her tea cup to overflow. She especially loves doing these tricks when she knows the “victim” is in need of a smile.
- Although she herself cannot act, Celestia loves visiting the theatre.
- Despite her royal duties, Celestia always makes time to visit her School for Gifted Unicorns, either to teach a class or two or to serve as merely visual inspiration.

Princess Luna:
After her return from banishment, Princess Luna felt herself distant from her pony subjects, some believing she was merely an old mare’s tale. Under the guidance of her sister and with time, Luna learned to connect with her subjects, although distant guilt still haunted the moon princess, even after the final fight with the Tantubus in the Dream Realm. To ease her guilt of past treason, Luna devoted her time and energy to work, both with royal duties and as Protector of Dreams. Work did not extinguish her guilt completely, and so the moon princess felt she needed to do even more for her subjects, something even her sister could not provide. Luna’s answer was soon answered when StarSwirl the Bearded came to visit Canterlot.

After the return of the Pillars of Equestria, StarSwirl the Bearded set out to better understand friendship and to better understand his new world. The grey unicorn also had another task in mind, something he felt to be far more grand: after learning of the birth of FlurryHeart and a brief period in the Crystal Empire, StarSwirl returned to Canterlot under the claim of researching on the creation of alicorns. StarSwirl already knew about the creation from magic: what he desired to learn more about was how an alicorn could be born. Celestia and Luna welcomed StarSwirl to reside in the Royal Canterlot Castle to further his research. Luna herself grew just as curious as StarSwirl: FlurryHeart was certainly a magical miracle and the ancient alicorn wanted to better understand her own kind. Luna also saw that in aiding the powerful unicorn in new research, hopefully the moon princess could provide more to the question. At first, StarSwirl spent most of his energy in either questioning Celestia who herself birthed more foals than any mortal, none alicorns, or conducting literary research in the Canterlot Library with the help of Luna. As the two ponies spent countless hours together and conversing, StarSwirl slowly saw an opportunity for experimentation, to try and create an alicorn himself, with the help of Luna. After StarSwirl proposed his inquiry to the moon princess, Luna agreed, and the two spent one quiet starry night outside of the library and outside the dream realm.

One beautiful full moon night, Luna gave birth to another magical miracle: an alicorn colt. After hiding her pregnancy from her subjects in fear of disappointing her subjects, Luna suddenly presented the alicorn colt to her subjects and even her sister, all of whom took the birth in shock but also pleasure. Luna never publicly revealed who sired the alicorn, claiming that her child came from the dream realm from the desire to please her subjects. Luna named the alicorn colt Prince Somnium, and the two bathed in the admiration of Equestria. Years passed with Luna raising her son to eventually take over the dream realm, serving as the Prince Protector of Dreams. As Somnium grew older, Luna continued to feel a passionate hunger, one that seemed to only dissipate in the nightly company of her loyal bat pony guards. Eventually a night of careless passion led to an unexpected pregnancy, one which Luna once again kept secret until the day of her new daughter’s birth. Although not an alicorn, the new Princess Viola Noctre served as a symbol of a new dawn for the recently re-emerged bat pony colonies.

As a mother, Luna is devoted and caring. Knowing full well how it felt to be cast aside, Luna spends much of her free time with her children. When raising Somnium, Luna pressed hard on her lessons for her son, sometimes causing multiple sleepless nights for the prince which eventually caused permanent insomnia. From this, Luna learned to not press so hard once her daughter was born. Luna does seem to dote more on Viola Noctre while her son Prince Somnium is seen in a different light.

Fun Facts:
- Luna is best princess
- Luna maintained her fillyhood freckles on her nose.
- Luna, like other ancient alicorns, is eternal rather than immortal.
- Luna developed nocturnal habits, such as sleeping during the day and being active at night, from her countless all-nighters and from both her children being “of the night”.
- Luna maintained her more antiquarian habit of forming a “herd”, or having multiple male partners at once, and presently has a “herd” of bat pony stallion guards.

Princess Serena:
Princess Serena is the present daughter of Princess Celestia and Rockhoof. Serena spent her fillyhood under the watchful eye of both her mother, her father, and the entire Royal Canterlot Guard, although somehow she almost always managed to escape their gaze and spend sunny afternoons in the Royal Canterlor Gardens. Although Serena knew of the circumstances of her birth and lineage at an early age, the filly never let anything such as a royal title, eternal bloodline, or even earth pony physique get in the way of enjoying her fillyhood. Serena gained the finest education in Canterlot, yet always found time to play with the other ponies of Equestria. As the filly grew into marehood, Serena grew more distant from the books of tutors, and instead showing talent reflecting both of her parent’s own skills. After reaching young marehood, Serena found herself sneaking away from her royalty lessons to peak in at her mother’s political meetings, fascinated how her mother could command and create change merely with words. Soon Serena found herself solving the problems of her classmate’s problems with merely her own clever words, bringing both pride to her heritage but also notes home to her mother Celestia commenting on how Serena would debate her own teachers on every subject. Celestia was amused at her daughter’s sharp tongue and mind, eventually bringing her to a few council meetings where the golden mare really shined. Rockhoof, although a glimpsing presence in his daughter’s life, swelled with pride for his offspring, often boasting about his little Serena single handedly solving border disputes and ceasing war talk as a young mare (none of which she did so young). When Serena reached marehood, with a new fresh cutie mark, Celestia invited her daughter to political talks to help the sun princess run Equestria fairly and as bright as the golden sun.

Fun Facts:
- Although Serena is smaller and shorter than both of her parents, the golden mare is larger than the average mare.
- Serena is somewhat more frail than her physique presents: the mare suffers from multiple fainting episodes from either self-induced stress or even simply not each enough proper food.
- Serena knows of her past siblings long since passed from both her eternal mother and ancient father: she is attempting to do genealogical research on the hope of finding living decedents from generations past.
- Despite her polite and even demure upbringing, Serena did inherit her father’s stubborn nature and will not back down from a challenge unless she herself admits defeat (which is rare).

Prince Somnium:
Prince Somnium is the eldest son of Princess Luna and StarSwirl the Bearded. Seen as a magical miracle possibly greater than FlurryHeart, Somnium grew up in lavish praise and with incredible expectations surpassing his own parents. Although siring the colt, StarSwirl never helped in raising the prince or even felt the need to interact with his son, leaving Luna to teach the prince everything he needed to know to fulfill his destiny. Like his cousin Serena, Somnium boasted the finest tutoring and education in Canterlot by day, and by night gained the full attention and educational direction of his mother. Somnium spent most of his colthood nights exploring the Dream Realm at the heels of his mother, often aiding the Protector of Dreams in vanquishing nightmares. From his upbringing of lavish and uniqueness, Somnium always felt entitled over other ponies, even as he explored the common ponys’ dreams. Growing up, Somnium continued his pretentious views on his eternal life, even claiming deity status similar to his mother and Aunt Celestia. Luna never really felt the need to curb his superiority complex since she knew if he was not confident in himself, he may go down a darker path. Somnium spent his remaining insomniatic nights under the guidance and aid of his mother, eventually taking her place as Prince Protector of Dreams once Princess Viola Noctre was born. Although the Dream Prince sees himself superior to most ponies, he never lets these views get in his way in protecting his subjects from sleepless nights under his mother’s moon.

Fun Facts:
- Prince Somnium is the tallest and largest of the royal family.
- Luna never told her son about his father, causing Prince Somnium to believe the “dream child” story of his creation.
- Somnium’s mane and tail seems to swirl in a dreamscape similar to his Aunt Celestia and mother Luna’s mane and tails.
- Somnium suffers from a permanent state of insomnia after spending more nights awake than asleep.
- Somnium is seen as an eligible bachelor in the eyes of both mares and stallions of Equestria, boosting the ego of the stallion.
- Somnium spends his days walking around the Royal Canterlot Castle with a cup of tea hovering by his side.

Princess Viola Noctre:
Princess Viola Noctre is the eldest daughter of Princess Luna and an unknown Bat Guard Stallion. Viola resulted from a careless night between Luna and a member of her bat pony “herd”, and although an accidental child, Luna loves her daughter and publicly claimed the child. From her birth, Viola brought shrieks of laughter ringing through the halls of the Royal Canterlot Castle. A night does not go by where the bat filly is not flying down the hallways with a trail of nannies chasing behind her. Although Luna does not know which bat stallion sired Viola, the bat pony colonies accept the filly as one of their own, even as a princess of the bat ponies. Bat ponies from across Equestria emerged from the shadows of the past once Luna returned from her banishment to see their new “princess”, the filly being a symbol of hope for the bat pony colonies eager to return to Equestrian society. No pony can say for certain where Viola’s path will lead, and for now the little filly simply does not care, instead demanding her mother or nannies or brother or whoever to play another game of tea party with the girly bat princess.

Fun Facts:
- Viola LOVES glitter, rainbows, and everything sparkly.
- Viola acts cat-like, being active during the dawn, dusk, and night.
- Viola insists on having a pet possum; however, Luna draws the line on pets until the bat filly is older.
- Viola is fascinated by her brother, especially his ability to enter the Dream Realm. Viola loves making her brother enter her dreams to play together.
- Viola always has a large grin on her face, showing off her fangs, which seems to scare ponies not used to her fangs (of course the filly loves scaring ponies for the first time).
