your current filter.While I agree that “toroidal bread products” have been around for thousands of years, I have to note that Luna still might be genuinely surprised that doughnuts are soft and sweet, unlike the likes of sushkas and barankas (i.e. cracker-like) she knew a millenia ago

Technically speaking the doughnut is roughly as old as baking bread. The remains of pastries or baked goods in the shape of doughnuts have been found at plenty of excavation sites from thousands of years ago. But the closest to what we would know of as the modern doughnut would be the dutch “oily cake” which made its way to the Americas through Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, the Anglo and American tradition thus picked up where the dutch deep-fried dough circle left off in America and spawned the modern doughnut. So really, something like the doughnut should exist; or at least a bagel, and have existed when Luna was banished and long before that. Unless Equestria is all sorts of fucked and baking just never happened until recently.
