Trixie wasn’t even all that evil in her first appearance and was just a conceited showoff. The second time she appeared she was sorta a villain but a lot of that probably had to do with the Alicorn Amulet’s dark magic. Once it was taken off of her, she acted completely different and even asked for forgiveness.

Flim and Flam were misusing the money for their resort instead of the university.

This was not Lightning Dust but a flanderized caricature of her.
Not really “legit” as the whole thing was “free” except we’ll only keep giving you the stuff you need to learn if you keep giving us money. And it wasn’t even money for the school but for a completely different business that none of the patrons were aware of.
The biggest mistake the “Friendship University” episode had was it doesn’t give more context on why Flim and Flam does that at the end.
Had the episode give more context it’ll be better. For example || it turns out the government gave them money to run the university for free, but instead keeps the money and also charge the student the exorbitant amount. That way kids will also going to learn a bit about corruption.||
But no, the actual episode didnt gave any. It now comes off as a duo whose having legit business practices being demonized for petty reasons.

even better, the deal the offered to Apples was actually not that bad, because with the amount of production their machine provided, even 25% cut would be profitable for Apples.
The Flim Flam brothers actually were honest business man in their first appearance. Their machine worked as intended and produced good-quality cinder. Their only crime was that they offered the Apples a bad deal. It was only their second appearance that turned them into outright con-men who sold a miracle cure that didn’t work. Yet I haven’t seen many complains about their characters being vilified.
Could she have been reformed? Sure. But not everyone is able or willing to overcome their flaws. She was always reckless and when her actions endangered the lives of other ponies she shrugged it off. Her continuing to be a reckless pony who doesn’t care about the risk, is actually in character. So I really don’t see the issue, with her not being reformed.
Actually she was not only Dashies rival but also her friend and partner.
And she was reckless, but she never included fillies into her stunts.
They villainized her character.
For me she’s brash and reckless, but not really evil or abusive ;)

Because Lightning was never a bad pony in the first place, she just made some mistakes.
And I’m one of the few people who doesn’t mind that she isn’t redeemed. The Flim Flam bros weren’t, so why should Lightning?

Josh Haber and Nicole Dubuc ruined everything, they are the story editors of Season 9 too..

Season 7 was awesome with the Sister writers around as head writers and story editor.

I took a look through the script as well but I believe it was the first translated version so it might have been off-colour from the episode itself, and of course the episode itself is still in French too.
Looking back on it I’m actually leaning more towards what you’re saying - they didn’t really actually do anything with her as I was saying, and by extension what you were saying about it therefore villainising her definitely seems to match up with that more.
I can’t say I’ve been a very big fan of RD or Scoots episode trends recently, and seems Lightning Dust’s been dragged down with the ship.
