Except Starlight was super confident that she banished only his body, so she wasn’t surprised to see his spirit roaming around the school.
 
Discord being forced to bypass the ban would imply that Starlight’s spell somehow is effective on him and he couldn’t enter the school unless he goes spirit mode.
 
I’d like to believe that Discord was just playing along.

I also think that he could have broken her ban at any time, for him it was just more fun this way.

I think it’s easier to travel between Discord’s world and the MLP world than EQG to MLP, due to them seeming to be similar enough to the point where your species doesn’t change.

…so she can open dimensional portals now? Last I recall. Only Super Sunset and Super SciTwi, two beings infused with massive amounts of energy collected from multiple sources can rip open dimensional holes.
 
Are you saying that Starlight managed that on her own, with no powerups and no transformation?
 
…actually…you COULD be right. The novel Ponyville Mysteries had Starlight entering Discord’s realm on her own. She also can nullify curses.

But if I’m right, the banishing spell not only affect Discord’s body it even affected those trees and the part of the ground. I might be wrong or not, just a little observation and possibility.
 
It could had vaporize his body but what if when she used again the spell to bring Discord back that meant that she was able to re-build his body?
 
Not probably dead since it was technically just a banishing spell. The could affect their bodies as they could be moving around with their spirit only like Discord but without powers.
 
Wouldn’t exactly call it a Anti-Discord spell since she only managed to banish his body and also Discord could have also been planning that too.
 
It is indeed powerful as she managed to get a banishing spell when not even Twilight could at the time. Meaning that Starlight is probably more powerful than unicorn Twilight. This kind of power can explainable as she has Twilight as a mentor. The power of the laser beam could had been out of rage.
 
And just to clarify this long comment, it is a theory-opinion so it might be wrong it might be not some of this information I had said.

Put it this way: If you want to use the primary source of information aka the episode as your evidence, then let’s look at the episode.
 
Discord’s SPIRIT came back to troll the school.  
Starlight explicitly said he only banished his BODY.  
Starlight’s banishment spell torched the ground and trees.
 
So. Using said evidence we can conclude that Starlight DID vaporize his physical body, not just teleport it somewhere outside the school ground.
 
Now imagine Starlight casting the same spell on some other characters…they’d probably be dead as in…their physical body would be gone.
 
The implication with Starlight just BANNING Discord from school is this: That means Starlight managed to prevent Discord’s physical body from entering school ground. That means Starlight somehow did an Anti-Discord Spell. Now THAT, is some really powerful shit. Starlight, a single unicorn without the elements, somehow blocks Discord from entering that he had to turn into a spirit to get in? Damn.
