Considering neither Starlight nor Spike talked about him in the past tense, yes, it is kind of awkward to contextualize it that way. That said, Discord intended to make her look unhinged, and it worked.
Let’s also not forget Discord didn’t seem to care that a Bugbear (whether it was the real deal or not, given he can do anything) was about to impale Yona on its stinger, or anyone who tried to get in its way before Starlight stopped it., as far as the lead-up to this.
