basically the artist got permabanned twice for being a dick in general. someone mentions this in the comments section and a bunch of the artist’s friends show up to white knight for him. cue endless bickering between anons and mods that leads absolutely nowhere and accomplishes nothing.

You might be on to something. But I think in a lot of cases troll-like argumenters stem from the general concept of it just being easier to pitch a fit when you don’t use arguments that can be debunked. No one can really debunk logic on the “I hate you. You suck.” level.
 
It takes at least some degree of critical thinking to actually defend a point with sound logic (when it isn’t just intended to attack someone) and people that aren’t good at critical thinking tend to steer clear of going through the effort of a thought out argument if they keep losing (getting debunked) when they try.

I thought so too, but they seem to get angry and riled up so quickly. OG trolls commit to the schtick and don’t let themselves become emotional during the process. It seems like people trying to be the OG 4chan trolls, but don’t know how, so instead they play a weird caricature of it that just bleeds into their normal behaviour.
 
 
I think they like to hide behind a veneer of “oh I’m trolling you haha”, but because it’s so ingrained into their personalities and how they behave generally it’s just actually how they act. It’s like they’ve played the role of the try-hard troll for so long that they’re not actually acting anymore. It’s almost like they’ve trolled themselves into believing their own bit.
