Apparently the main reason for it, and the reason for the forked tongue, is they can determine the direction of scents the way we can determine the direction of sounds :D

You may want to change that to ‘Pet Snakes are usually safe to touch’.
Touching a wild snake in the outdoors is not an good idea as they’re not used to being handled by humans like pet snakes are and will most likely bit you if you try to touch them.
If you want to touch a snake then go to the pet store.
I mean, they ARE considered vermin in some places. So, yeah, snakes are verminous, in the sense of being vermin-y.
