The practice of palette swapping was in no wise unique to nor distinctive of RPG style games.
Or like one of those RPG video game monsters/enemies that look like ones you’ve seen earlier in the game, only they’re different colored, and stronger, or have different attacks. (I oddly kinda like those kinda enemies.)

Almost like they’re built using the same puppet with different color schemes or something.
Funny how all it takes is slightly different eyes, hair, and coloring to change a pony into a totally different character.
