Unlike Twilight who got wings because, I don’t even know why… I mean… I’m over it? But… That was just sorta random.
God knows they’re handing out wings like cheap cigars. I’ll bet you 100 real life dollars that the alicorn population will explode on the final episode.
If anything, the surprise has less to do with Spike getting wings, and more to do with Spike getting wings in this episode.

It was actually Hasbro. Larson just wrote episode around it.
The “Thanks, M.A. Larson” is MLP’s version of the “thanks, Obama!” meme. It can be applied to situations even when Larson had nothing to do with them. That said, wasn’t Larson the one who came up with Twilight becoming an alicorn? It’s been a while since I watched the show, so I can’t remember.
