Bottom line, 2/5 Stars, bad characters and writing, only slightly interesting because the plot is unique.

Unique plot? hold on, let me laugh my shit out.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

The two biggest problems I have with Fallout Equestria are 1) the writer has diarrhea of the pen, with no sense at all how to assemble an acceptably paced chapter containing events that are worth the time they take to read, and 2) it has no reason to be a Pony fanfic other than because ponies are popular, and the gimmick of having ponies helps it stand out from all the other mediocre Fallout fanfics out there. Take the ponies away, and you have an overly long and self-indulgent Fallout fanfic that’s mostly filler.

@Vitruvius
I don’t know about that. I skim through the 3000+ comments left on the Past Sins page on fimfiction and I find the reception overwhelmingly positive. And it’s not even substantial praise detailing specifically what they liked either.

Gushing praise and/or vehemently biased rants aren’t reliable. So take them with copious amounts of salt or just move on.

I’ve seen a lot more people ranting about what a Mary Sue Nyx is than I’ve seen praising Past Sins for…well, for anything. Methinks this rant is unneeded.

If you don’ like the fanfic then don’t fucking read it! Simple as that! Fuck what is with people starting pointless arguments!

Ok, this is old, but i joined the fandom when S2 was about to get started, so i missed this and never really got interested in it.

I’ve read that analysis in that link (thanks BP, it was very useful), and well… All i get is that is a bad fic. poorly written, bland chars, OOC chars, poor story, excesive repetitions…

Thanks again, BP, you’ve saved me a lot of time.

Also to point out one of the OP’s original points, if you try posting any of those criticisms anywhere near Pen Stroke, they will be deleted and reported.
Background Pony #66DC
If you want the points to be elaborated upon, no one does a better job reviewing this thing than this guy right here:

http://onemansponyramblings.blogspot.com/2012/06/6-star-reviews-part-75-past-sins.html

He reviews a LOT of fanfics and I feel he has always been fair and knowledgeable.

His summary if you don’t want to read the review:

It’s true that there are a lot of things this story does poorly. The characters are flat, the writing quality is unexceptional at best and below-average towards the end, and I have some serious issues with the ending, and the presentation of the princesses generally (though I did like the assertiveness shown by Pen Stroke’s Luna). But with that said, I can easily see why this story became popular. Despite being hampered by a protagonist who’s really difficult to like in the first half, Past Sins is engaging throughout, and its tone and pacing are superb. As it goes along, the story asks some important questions about how our history defines us, and what makes us who we are. And although it seems to me that the conclusions on that front are frighteningly Orwellian, that can’t completely invalidate the rest of the story.

Bottom line, 2/5 Stars, bad characters and writing, only slightly interesting because the plot is unique.

Wow, your argument is really all over the place with this. I’m in a helpful mood right now; let me offer some advice.

What kind of argument are you trying to make with this, OP? Are you trying to make a comparison? Make it persuasive, perhaps? You start it off with an obvious straw man that dismisses any criticism against any points you make. Why would you start an argument with this? I’m not surprised if most here are completely dismissive of this. Start a claim this ham-fisted and confrontational, no one is going to even consider your completely biased opinion worth any merit. If you want people to actually read this, don’t make it so polarizing.

Accusing everyone of different opinion to be butthurt? Seriously?

There really is no subtlety in this at all. It is obvious that things like “Past Sins is the Twilight saga of MLP” are just thrown in as jabs. Arguments like this have no substance if you just throw them in there like that. They don’t make you “right.” If you can’t back up a claim, toss it out all together. If you were going to actually make a comparison, list similarities between them. Or better yet, pick something more accurate to compare it to. Don’t use the Twilight saga just to stack negative association with the fic.

The hastily given praise you give to Pen Stroke sounds incredibly hollow when it is sandwiched between claims with no substance to them. Seriously, support your argument. Elaborate your point. Cite examples and analyze them. You say “It could have been written and solved SO much better. Heck, I could pull out ten different, more in canon ways of writing it, just by taking what we got and building it up from there.” Talk is cheap, yeah? Go ahead, list some in your argument and explain why they’re “more canon.”

Hopefully, this rant is not indicative of what you consider “constructive criticism.” No, this is unmistakably destructive criticism with no soul. You make an argument this aggressive and you expect the responses to be agreeable? “But if I point out a flaw, I don’t want people yelling at me, calling me names and then the author even showing up and being a butthurt idiot to me.” You get what you give, OP. Pointing out flaws is fine, but be more neutral if you want to actually make a point.

You guys, the age of something doesn’t mean people can’t criticize it. I haven’t read Past Sins. I have no real interest to read the standalone version, but I’ll probably check out the riff.

FoE is pretty friggin great, as a total package, but yeah the individual chapters could use some condensation and cleanup. It seems about a third longer than it really has to be, and not because of non-story-related memory orb fluff. it’s kinda like our fanfic version of LOTR, where everyone that has gotten through the whole thing has loved it, but there are pages and pages where SHIT DON’T HAPPEN MAN.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I didn’t care much for Past Sins, and I didn’t like Fallout Equestria either, though I stopped reading about ten chapters in. After My Little Dashie, I realized my preferences in MLP fanfiction are opposed to the brony mainstream… and that’s perfectly fine. Different strokes and all that.
Background Pony #67AD
The irony is, the OP already pre-emptively banned criticism of his actions by starting off with a violent strawman. Apparently, anyone who could potentially find fault with him is a butthurt manchild who can’t stand criticism and screams all the time.

Apparently he missed that whoever the screams come from is the one screaming.

Finally! Thanks BG pony for at least SOME sort of feedback, unlike the most here.
I’ll work on it.
Background Pony #09D2
The Good
• Addressing Nyx’s poor color aesthetics
• Criticizing how she avoids the negative effects of her actions/inactions and avoids consequences through no special action on her part.

The Bad
• Minor spelling errors
• Some inconsistent grammar
Twilight comparison and second paragraph’s topic should be merged.
• Weak argument: Foal NMM as Nyx might actually be his idea (nobody’s calling plagiarism). Him claiming NMM’s personality as his own idea would be a better argument.
• Faulty argument: Fanfiction has every right to distance itself from the canon and many fanfictions frequently differ from the canon material’s genre.
