In my country, its very typical that families are broken. Not because the parents are divorced but because one of the parents needs to find work overseas because typical local work wasn’t enough to financially support a family. I grew up not seeing my mom years at a time. I barely even recognized her the first time she came home from Japan. Whenever she’s home, she just wants to know everything she missed about me and my sister growing up. Stellar Flare and Firelight’s priorities were messed up if they think their conflicting visions for their town were more important than their kids that ran away from them many years ago.

The parents responses when they were pulled back indicated they thought Starlight and Sunburst wouldn’t want to spend time with them (they get super excited when they realize that if the friendship problem is between them then their kids “have to” spend time with them), which could be seen as why they seemed so willing to walk away initially, they expected Starlight and Sunburst to not want to keep talking.

Actually it was bad writing. The parents didn’t really care that their kids are home after many years. They were too preoccupied with their “unnecessary feud.” The moment that the parents interacted, they both turned and walked away from each other leaving their kids behind even though that’s probably the first time they saw their kids since they left Sire’s Hollow. Starlight had to levitate them back. The parents were just written to not care. Again, that’s bad writing because its not a natural response for parents. Or for anyone, I guess.

The point was, I believe, that both their parents are stuck in the moments when their kids were most vulnerable and when they couldn’t help them. Stellar wants to protect Sunburst from feeling like a failure again after flunking out of magic school, and Firelight hovers around Starlight to assure her she’s not going to be abandoned again. They didn’t ask them where they’d been or what they did after leaving because both still view them as the poor, troubled children they failed to support when they needed it most.
