@Frustration in Excelsis
Okay, thanks for the information and I do hope the staff would do something different if they were introduce this species like you said
These deer specifically – King Aspen, Bramble, Blackthorn – come from an arc of the comics that was… let’s say not very popular. It was not especially well written, and a big part of it came from the deer embodying the preachy, holier-than-thou, we-live-in-harmony-with-nature-and-you-don’t-so-that-means-we’re-superior-to-you-in-every-meaningful-way sort of attitude that makes elves unpopular in a lot of modern works that they appear in. There were other issues (for example the way the plot needed the ponies, the same ones who make the weather, care for the Equestrian wildlife, guide migrating birds back home and so on, to casually disregard and harm the environment like our own society does so that the deer could reprimand them for it) but the deer’s characterization specifically is what I think puts people off from wanting to see them in the show.
That being said, if the show had sapient deer, then it’s likely they wouldn’t be the comics’ ones – when the show treads ground the comics already have, it tends to rarely if ever confirm comic canon, and usually contradicts it instead.
@Darth Shy
The situation with the comics is that they’re “optional canon”. You can consider events in them to be canon except where the show directly contradicts them.
@Background Pony #ECC0
I can see, I don’t think the comics are canon so the deers appearing on the show wouldn’t be a reference. They would’ve just done a similar idea.
But I get what you mean.
@Darth Shy
Not a fan of the idea of the comics being referenced. I don’t really hate the comics, but there’s quite a bit in them that I’d rather not see even slightly acknowledged.
Yes but he walks on two legs, both the feral deer in the show and sapient ones in the comics walk on four legs and are very similar appearance wise unlike the difference between a housecat and an anthro humanoid cat

Maybe they’re just really quiet, or welfare mooches.

Out of curiosity, what do you have against the idea?
Good point. Still, hopefully it doesn’t happen.
We’ve already seen non sapient cats, yet Capper is a character
We’ve already seen non-sapient deer on the show so hopefully not
Okay, but maybe they’ll appear on the show one day?
I’d love to see new species and cultures explored
lolno
This is just for the game
In one comic, they were.
In show, they’re legally kept as pets.
The ones in the forest must have been mutants, like a planet of the apes kind of deal.
From what I remember of the comics, they seem to be.
Are the feral deer at fluttershy’s cottage the equivalent of orangutans for humans?
