The concept of being both naturally born Alicorns and ascended Alicorns can’t coexist? I think they can.
 
According to Faust, she intended Celestia and Luna to be naturally born Alicorns and while some of her concepts were later discarded, the Journal of Two Sisters book and the IDW comics kind of lean towards Celestia and Luna being naturally born Alicorns.

I mean come on now that episode of Twilight and her was adorable, they having a baby was never an issue to me… being another Alicorn was… alicornation really lost its value to me past the point… I had head canon of my own alicornation was a gift for huge accomplishment… now more like real world life it’s just something you’ve to be lucky enough to be born with… meh.
