I imagine it’s possible for more than one pony to write the same spell.

Yeah, that’s true. But she said it’s a spell she made up. Remember, she can alter and combine spells. So she might have mixed in a couple elements from the age spell with a few other things to make it look and feel like they regressed in age, but not actually doing so. Ergo, making a new spell.

This part was both cute & sad.

And yeah, it seemed like an illusion spell to me too.

To be fair, most people assume it’s an age spell because it’s presented like one. It’s just that you only realize that it probably isn’t one when you think about it after the fact.

And that’s the problem. People just straight up make assumptions after their first viewing and just stick to it. I mean, there are two factors to take in. One, both spells are casted completely differently (One needs a scroll and one can just be blasted on someone). And two, Starlight said she made up the spell. How can she make up a spell that already exists? You can’t reinvent the wheel.

As for where do Starlight’s hair ties came from when she transforms, I guess that comes from the illusion.

Here’s the real question: where do Starlight’s hair ties come from when she transforms into a filly? Because she doesn’t wear her hair in bunches as an adult.

It certanily wasn’t an age spell. it’s most likely an illusion spell. Sunburst’s cape would’ve been remained if it was an actual age spell.

Um, no. Again, I’m just talking about her basic insecurity and immaturity. For the most part, Starlight is shown to be kind of timid when dealing with others and terrified of getting hurt again. I see that as more arrested development than anything else. For whatever reason, she had only one friend in childhood — whose loss was devastating — and clearly didn’t have a supportive family to compensate. There’s always this sense of desperation about her, and her need to use magic to hold her world together because she still feels weak and helpless.

You know, I just noticed something in this. Child characters on the show are always given three highlights in their eyes, as opposed to the two in adult characters eyes. If you look closely, Sunburst still only has two while Starlight has three. I wonder if that was an animation error or whether it was on purpose to show that Starlight was going all in on this game of “Let’s Pretend” while Sunburst was still very much an adult. Starlight goes back to two highlights when she breaks the spell.

I can see that.

It’s not certain it’s actually an age spell, is it? It might just be a really elaborate illusion and transformation spell. If she actually made them little kids, wouldn’t she lose the ability to turn them back?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I mean, it has to be. Not only was she able to turn them back despite being a “kid” but the scenery changed too. I don’t think Starlight’s able to turn a castle made from the Tree of Harmony into a simple house. I dunno, I think it was a simulation too.

Twilight:“but how can you do an age spell that’s only for the highest level unicorns”

Although Starlight is definitely one of the highest level unicorns. She could magically fight an alicorn to a stalemate, remember?

To be fair, she’s not that bad anymore. I mean, here she was mature enough to undo everything once she saw that Sunburst wasn’t having fun. But I see what you mean. She’s learning though :)

Oh, certainly. But a moment of thought should have told her that just suddenly turning an adult into a little kid without warning probably wouldn’t go over well.

I kind of love Starlight, but I really suspect that sad little kid is still inside of her and frequently calls the shots.

She panics and then comes up with a grandiose magical scheme to force the world to conform to what she wants, as opposed to seeing the other person’s point of view.

I meant in terms of her emotional immaturity and her lack of impulse control. She panics and then comes up with a grandiose magical scheme to force the world to conform to what she wants, as opposed to seeing the other person’s point of view.

I see her as the world’s oldest eight year old.
