No, one of the best depictions of the Equestrian military is in the Winningverse fanfiction universe.  
Unfortunately the writer is obsessed with magical homosexual spawn and drove me away.  
But overall, the richness, thought, and detail of expanding the political and historical nature of Equestria was rather epic.

I think it might be best for her to actually join a proper military branch rather then the guard. While she’d certainly no doubt do well in the guard and even rise to a position of authority easily with her past experience, I can also see her somewhat bored out of her mind if she was stuck there given her level of skill.
 
Actually that does pose a question. Is the guard an actual military branch or is it, well, the guard? If the latter this goes explain a bit more why they don’t have the best track record: Their duty is more to keep order among the populace and solve domestic disputes as well as guard the palace. While I imagine they’ve probably undergone some basic riot tactics, they are not trained to deal with major threats like Tirek or Discord and the like. At best they are cops in plate armor, at worst ceremonial. Or to put it in 40k terms, the Royal guards are akin to the Planetary Defence Forces not the Astra Militarum
 
I mean, the Wonderbolts are akin to the air-force does this mean we have a Naval branch of sorts? Or hell, is there an airship navy? I sort of doubt it but…Come on, admit it, that would be awesome. By that same logic, a proper military force wouldn’t be out of the realm of impossibility.
 
The guard being like this does explain some things, and in honesty it’s so far my head-canon, but it also does raise questions of where the heck some of these other forces have been during other crisis’ if they even do exist (Excluding the Wonderbolts).
 
Am I overthinking this? Or am I just being a dummy? I don’t know, but I think it does bare some discussion.
