I’m so happy I made this model for many reasons. Both personal and technical reasons.
Season 7 Episode 13 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is currently tied for first place in my personal list of MLP episodes. I won’t dive too deep into why it connects with me so much, but I will says that I did lose my father at a young age, but I am forever grateful that I see my mom every day to this day.
Creating this model challenged me when it came to creating the mesh for the mane. This was something I was afraid of doing specifically for Pinkie Pie with the poofy and curly hair, but now that I’ve done this, Pinkie Pie’s going to be a cakewalk compared to this. The mane mesh is one of the best pieces of modeling work I’ve done so far, and I’m proud of it despite me feeling like I have a really hard time trying to understand Pear Butter’s mane in 3-Dimensions.
I have also learned how to make my models look a whole lot better through the materials. A while back I received criticism that I should be using Sub-Surface Scattering. At the time, I was like “I don’t really know how to implement that into my materials, but I’ll learn how to do that maybe sometime way later” or something like that. And I should have listened to that way sooner. Sub-Surface Scattering makes the pony model look way more alive and real and more pleasant to look at. It’s quite fantastic.
Without Sub-Surface Scattering, a scene like this would have been impossible to pull off well:

I’d really like to see that happen at some point too. We’ll see, I’d need to get in contact with someone who has access to a decent 3D printer.
What NEEDS to be done is a local option like the HiDPI one.

Problem is there is no way to do good full webm previews like gifs without an assload of bandwith issues. A slideshow preview to be is a small sacrifice for a much smaller (in filesize) and much more color rich animation. GIF is just outdated these days.
The flat tail thing was mostly due to my lack of understanding of how her hair would look in 3-Dimensions when looking at her design in the show. Doing it the way I did it was the only way I could get something done and still look good enough. Maybe at some point in the future I can improve it.
And a thing I’ve noticed with the face distortion thing is that it’s way easier to spot it happening when the camera rotation is at a fixed, predictable speed, also with the model sitting perfectly still.
I feel like the way you’ve done the hair is a bit odd, like I know you went for a shape to make it look like it is in the show from side view, but there’s sections of her hair and tail that are unnaturally flat while the rest is all wavy.
I need to figure out how to do subsurface scattering and volumetric stuff in blender, it adds that little bit that makes them feel so much nicer.
Yup, I’m aware of the amazing compression capabilities WebMs have. But they way they are implemented on this site at the moment is discouraging me from using them. I’d honestly be more supportive of a gif preview of WebMs that were more complete and still played at a watchable framerate (of at least for first 400 frames or first 10 seconds, whichever comes first), but of course keep the WebM text above.
Also I somehow knew the plot comments would be prominent for this one.
