At 8” tall, I’m guessing he’s about Celestia-sized in the show. I got the impression that this was a much larger toy from earlier descriptions.

Wait…aren’t Hippogriffs the crossbreed of a pegasus and a griffon?
Crossbreeding is canon, so Spike can make babies with Rarity after all! Well…that’s just what I’m thinking right now with this guy.
 
Here’s my thoughts on that from a different thread:
 
Maybe they are from a land where there were mixed groups of griffons and ponies that eventually bred true as hippogriffs, and the pony and griffon populations were replaced over time as hippogriff traits are dominant.

On the one hand, one crossbreed being possible doesn’t mean another two pairs of species are compatible.
 
On the other hand Dragons have been known in many depictions to produce offspring with pretty much everything.

Do you think while designing him, they made the conscious decision not to make him look like a MLP griffon?
