Damn straight son, you could learn a thing or two from me. :P

Being serious now, the way I present a point does not negate that point’s validity (or lack there of). I was giving a prime example of Whitely starting off with a promising premise, only to screw the pooch by the end. This was a counterpoint to the idea that Whitely only does good work.

Well, it may mean it’s canon, but if you mean the bullet points at the end of the preview on Equestria Daily , ie the source of this image, it states:
Bullet points:
Ties into new season of My Little Pony!

So I’m not sure it means it’s absolutelly canon. Again, they were comics which were similary tied to the first Equestria Girls movie, that shown details that were latter contradicted (ie a very different (pony) Moondancer, who is a few years older than Twilight, a different version of Shadowbolts, who lost with the Wondercolts, something commented to have never happened before Friendshio Games etc).

To be clear, I would like if the comic was canon, I’m just not sure if you mean the above source, it’s so sure.
If season 7 though, directly refernces this story, it’s a wholly different, and yes, then it’s canon.

You may not like what I am going to say but I read somewhere on Equestria Daily that Legends of Magic is connected to season 7. That means: It is canon and accept it!

I just wish this wasn’t canon (although the comics are not just as much canon to me as the show, they should still be considered , (often)unfortunately). Celestia being arrogant and cruel, and Luna being “obviously worse at magic than her great, talented sister”. Seriously? This is not what I’d like to see. Hopefully the other pages are better than this.

@Red-Supernova
I also had doubts about this comic, but they proven to be unfounded, and I actually quite like this issue.
I recommed to read it, as I think it handled well this addition to Celestia characterisation and history.

So I read the comic - and thankfully, I was pretty much entirely wrong (aside from arguably some very minor stuff, but more on that bellow).

The comic does show Celestia as mean spirited, and haughty, but gives her some ground on it, as she cannot advance to more advanced subject, if Luna doesn’t.

But it’s shown when || Luna is abducted by the Nightmare stuff || Celestia loves her sister dearly, as as jumps to Luna’s help as a immediate reaction to her sister being in danger. The only critique, is that Celestia was shown as very unsympathetic up to this point, but I guess it’s largelly because of the limits of the story’s length.

Celestia also shows great guilt after this, blaming herself, that Luna was abducted, and the tragic part is, she is (largely) right. She also is incredibly dedicated to save Luna, and it’s so important, Celestia even doesn’t think it through, as she is even stated in comic to usually.

Generally I like this comic, and I happily admit I was wrong.

I fear though the Celestia hatedom will || use the fact Celestia ultimately pressured Luna with her teasing/mocking to open the portal to the “Nightmare Dimension”, and apparently cause Luna to have contact with what ultimately will turn her into Nightmare Moon, ignoring the fact Celestia also in the same comic, prevented Luna from becoming Nightmare Moon much earlier, and in this time, with a weaker, less experienced Celestia, Nightmare Moon might have won. ||

@Reclaiming
Yup, and Celestia also goes through a similar character development as Sunset, although with different circumstances.

@Dustcan

Also, a minor thing, and a bit late:

As for the retconing, the same dialogue that supposedly retcons Starswirl’s presence also mentions that he went on multiple sabbaticals. He could easily have disappeared before NMM then returned in time for Reflections before disappearing again sometime after.

From what was was told, it pretty much seemed Starswirl final disappearance, was before Luna became Nightmare Moon.
Sunbburst: “And when he didn’t return?
Celestia: “At first we were he would. Then, once a few months have passed we stopped looking. We were still young, and we didn’t dare to disturb our tutors things. *Then there was the fight, and I exilled Luna to the Moon. After that I was to busy…or perhaps it hurt too much to think of those days.”

I pretty much got it from that Celestia states she never met with Starswirl, after the first Nightmare Moon crisis.

Again though, in perspective, it’s a minor mistake, and as I noticed before, I was wrong with my doubts about this story, and I’m happy because of that.

@Magic Man
I’d point out that this takes place in essentially the Middle Ages, so Starswirls perspective on age groups might be a bit skewed. After all, 14 year old led armies in our Middle Ages.
Magic Man

The one thing that irked me somewhat about this issue was Starswhirl’s approach to the two sisters.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m totally behind his pragmatism/neutrality, not putting up with Celestia’s arrogance but not coddling Luna either. And I can understand where he’s coming from that he needs to teach them both as much as he can, while he can.

But the problem is that Luna and Celestia at this point in time are clearly in two starkly different age groups. Is it really fair to expect Luna to “keep up” with a sister who’s considerably older and thus more experienced already? Celestia may picks things up quicker sure, but age is a factor that has to be taken into consideration.

And if she’s lagging behind, surely aren’t there other very powerful and skilled wizards who Starswhirl can call on to help tutor Luna to give her that little extra support? There’s rarely ever just one teacher in a student’s life.

I dunno, it just felt like a lot of pressure was put upon Luna unnecessarily, which led to Celestia’s frustration and taking it out on her.
Reclaiming

I know this has nothing to do with any of the mean Celestia discussion, but I really appreciate Starswirl’s relative pragmatism/neutrality. The old fella isn’t shying away from a fact, even if it’s one that Luna doesn’t want to hear.

Celestia is being a massive jerk, but consider. She’s a teenager (factually volatile of attitude) who’s already an alicorn with unrivaled talent and a destiny that puts her above every other pony she knows. Of course she’s gonna have a big head, especially when her next nearest peer (in this case, Luna) is so far behind her.

The sentiment that she closely resembles a certain fireball-colored pony from far in the future is intriguing, to me at least.
