Yes, Unicorn Colony means majority unicorn, but majority still doesn’t mean 100%. They need food and weather and they need other ponies for that.
At the end it’s not really important for the story.

I’m pretty sure Unicorn Colony means majority unicorn.
And it’s as simple as an area being settled mainly by unicorns and the other two types simply not showing up.

Unicorn Colony doesn’t mean population is 100% unicorn. How would that work? Are there laws that say “No Earth Ponies can buy houses in this area” ? “No horn no entrance”? Racially segregated Equestria is simply not my headcanon, so even in mainly unicorn town I’d always include some Earth Ponies…
Then I guess we’ll have to wait until we see more of the citizenry in that village.
Until then, Unicorn Colony is as valid as anything.
You could extrapolate the same thing about Canterlot from what we saw of it in episode 1, which was about the same amount of screen time Starlight’s home village has had, but we’ve seen plenty of earth ponies and pegasai there. Some people need to back up their headcanons before shoving them on others.
I guess it was extrapolated from there being only unicorns seen there.
Where did this unicorn colony thing come from? Was that actually in the dialogue during her origin story?

Starlight Glimmer’s village is an unicorn colony, and no earth ponies should be around. And if they do, at least as peasants or lowlies. But judging how ponies can be as classists as humans, they would look them down for what they are, not just for the cutie mark.
